A cool bar full of all sorts of nooks and crannies for private conversations, and many other private things. However, Sundays sees another side to Libation when it hosts its usual girls’ night. The place quickly becomes packed to the brim and just spills with women, and a couple of dudes here and there. But no matter what time you decide to visit you’ll find that they really are a friendly bunch of people here, who also know how to make a mean cocktail.

It was Grand Final day and my friend and I were looking to go somewhere we knew wouldn’t be showing the game on a massive telly and where we’d be able to get a seat and make conversation. We went to Libation. A low-key kid on the queer-friendly scene, Libation draws a very mixed and casual crowd more into sitting around and talking than dancing and getting rowdy — at least when I’ve been, though I’ve walked past on couple of Sunday arvos and it’s been absolutely packed. The interior caters to conversation: couches and stools scattered in the front bar, with more couches lining the walls of the moodier back room. There are also tables out front, though they are right next to the tram stop on the corner of Brunswick and Johnston Sts, so aren’t the most intimate places to sit. The bar is pretty standard: Tiger for $ 5 a pot and a basic selection of bottled beer, with spirits made about as well as you could mix your own. But it’s a friendly place to pull up a chair, and it turned out, the perfect escape from Grand Final fever.

Libation is a small bohemian hang-out located on funky Brunswick Street. The cosy venue provides a cool place to hang out and chill-out with your mates. You can find a mix of events here. Live music and DJ’s give Libation a great ambient atmosphere perfect for some intimate conversation. The venue has a great range of beers, wines and spirits with some friendly smiles behind the bar. I usually find myself at Libation when they run ‘Lover Tits’, an event aimed at the Lesbian community. The gang and I will head down and enjoy the electro-clash /nu-disco beats while sitting in the small outdoor area. The only downfall i guess is when the beats begin to drop, the lack of a dance floor seems to plague my mind! However don’t stress, after you’re done at Libation the surrounds are limitless in a good dance floor!
