Our mid-week dining night at Maya was quiet, but then there’s plenty of competition in Freo and restaurants usually fill out later in the week. Maya has plenty of tables, including an upstairs room that serves as a bar area. Some interesting art work, a dark wooden staircase, and sparkling chandeliers added some character to the décor. Our starters were Chowk Ki Tikki — scrumptious potato patties with chick peas, chilli, cumin and 3 sauces(including my favourite tamarind sauce); and Tiger Prawns — Shark Bay tiger prawns with pineapple and tomato chutney. Although the tandoor-cooked prawns sounded promising, they were a bit on the dry side. Our Fish Qmin curry with saltwater barramundi fillets was spicy and creamy at the same time. Flavoured with cumin, chilli and fenugreek and cooked in coconut milk, this was a noteworthy dish, and as good as some of the better fish curries I’ve had before. The Chicken Mumtaz, commonly known as butter chicken, was the standout dish of the evening. With chicken pieces that had the desired marinated smoky tandoor flavour with a rich creamy tomatoey sauce, this is the best version I have had in Perth. I’ve had so many appalling versions of this dish that I rarely order it, but I’m so glad we did. It’s heartening to know that while there are a plethora of mediocre Indian restaurants around the traps, there is thankfully a handful of top notch establishments that don’t cheat on the preparations, and don’t dumb down the ingredients. The garlic naan was the perfect accompaniment to our meal, along with a bowl of Basmati rice. We were too full to contemplate dessert, but we did manage to down a few glasses of reasonably priced SSB during our meal. The wait staff at Maya were cheerful and friendly, and the wait time for food was brief. Most of our dishes were beautifully flavoured and well presented, and I’m eagerly anticipating a return in the colder months to sample one of their degustation menus. Recommended for lovers of good Indian food.

Im gonna have to be brutal here; i was abit disappointed with this place. Yes, its a lil bit fancy and more family-run small restaurant-ish but i felt it was a little lack-lustre. I had read some rave reviews on this place but i found it quite bland and flavourless. Service was great though as staff were attentive and friendly.

The food was excellent here and the prices were fair. The service was very prompt and the garlic nan bread and rice were a perfect compliment to the butter chicken. I would definitely eat here again and plan to before I must leave and return to the US. Charles

I do enjoy going to dinner in Fremantle, mostly because it’s close, but I also enjoy the evening atmosphere(before there are too many patrons stumbling between The Newport and Metros). And since I have been on a mission to try as many Indian restaurants as possible, I thought what better than to combine the two! I would definitely recommend a booking especially if it’s a Friday or Saturday night although the staff were very friendly and took our number and offered to call when they had a table ready, which allowed us some freedom to have a wander and take in the quirks of Fremantle. When we arrived back at the restaurant we quickly decided to skip the entrée in favour of me fitting in dessert and went right on to the lamb rogan josh and beef korma. The flavours were great, with the perfect amount of spice and the meat was well cooked and tender in both. I was decidedly underwhelmed by the naan, which was a little disappointing as that’s one of my favourite parts of eating a curry. There is a bar hidden away up a very narrow and steep set of stairs, and the restrooms are in the middle of staircase, which definitely made for an interesting trip while sober — I can’t imagine the struggles of ascent and descent after a few beverages! One of the perks of this is that there is a good alcohol selection available through the restaurant as well! I really enjoyed the atmosphere and décor here. It was warm, intimate and inviting, but also well-spaced enough to allow it to look organised — although there were some interesting choices of paintings scattered along the walls. Maya’s isn’t the best Indian I’ve ever had, but the staff are friendly, the meals are well priced and there is something very welcoming about the place. A good, safe choice.

I’ve been here twice now and about a year apart between visits. I found the service to be consistent, friendly and capable. The food has always been as ordered, a decent size and tasty. It certainly hits the spot. According to other reviews, Maya has been kicking along for a couple of years now and seems to be relatively successful. Certainly the position on the what-must-be-ridiculously-expensive-café-strip in comparison to the prices(reasonable) gives rise to the notion they are doing A-OK. Solid 3.5 stars from me.

Stopped here for a late lunch one day, and the place was pretty empty. The décor itself is nothing to get too excited about, but it’s a nice location in Freo, with fun people-watching. The service was friendly and the food came reasonably quickly, Prices were about the norm for Freo. The food itself was very decent Indian, but nothing to particularly write home about. I would certainly be happy to go here again, but I still rate Haandi as the best Indian place in Freo…

We came here for a Freo curry, something we had not done for year’s, since the old Fire station days. We had the 10 course degustation, on a ’50% off Dimmi’s offer. Truth be told the food was pretty decent(although ’ it’s not Chutney Mary’s’ K said) Salmon in particular was terrific, butter chicken not so much. For $ 80 for 2 ok value(plus wine). If not ’50% off’ would have felt ripped off. As it was we re-entered the freezing Freo night satisfied but not overjoyed.

I haven’t been to eat here, but the lounge bar is enjoyably odd. It’s hidden away upstairs and has a very limited cocktail list. When I was in here, the bartender refused to diverge from his list, which was a bit bizarre to say the least, especially as we were only after martinis. Nonetheless, there’s a great atmosphere to the room and it’s a nice alternative to the busier nightspots in town, where you can find a table and chat with some friends over drinks. The interior decoration is simple but elegant and makes a nice environment to be in. Worth checking out to see if it’s your kind of place.

I walked past this clean, crisp restaurant many a time when I was at uni. I always thought it looked like a rather extravagant place to dine, with its prim and proper wait staff and fresh white table cloths. I feasted in the restaurant for the first time a few weeks ago, and turns out, it is rather extravagant, minus the extravagant price tag. I was actually blown away I could get such delicious and unique Indian cuisine at such reasonable prices. And such a selection to choose from too! The mains were all just over twenty dollars each and I was extremely impressed with the breadth of the vegetarian selection. I had the vegetable curry but want to go back and try something a bit more adventurous. Perhaps the dish with dates in it would be good… The sweets were the best part of the night, the menu offering a host of traditional and delectable Indian taste sensations. The rice flower and chocolate pudding was amazing and I sneaked a bite of the warm carrot halva plus vanilla ice-cream. I’ll get that next time! This place is delicious food in a clean, crisp and welcoming environment, with a price tag that may just shock you — for all the right reasons.

I love a good Indian meal but feel I never really have one that lives up to those that I experienced in the UK. Maya comes close, it has one of the best butter chickens I have ever tasted! I tried a few dishes and my gosh all of the just delicious! It has a really nice ambience inside, just a really nice restaurant really. I love the fact that despite being an amazing Indian restaurant, it also has a bar upstairs, sheer bliss!

It’s very easy to get Indian food wrong but also very difficult to get it right and combine it with a wonderful atmosphere and service. I don’t know how they did it but Maya have managed all of it. The food not only tastes delicious but smells beautiful too. Try the lamb palak if you get a chance. No matter how many times I have eaten lamb, few cook it as well as the Indians and this place tops the lot in Perth. Get it with the garlic naan so you don’t leave anything in the bowl. There’s a little bar upstairs if you don’t fancy going home after your meal or if you are too stuffed to walk on.

The food at Maya is excellent. I’d even go as far as to say it’s one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve ever been to, and I am a HUGE fan of Indian food. It’s won a stack of awards(you can see them all lining the walls on the way to the bathroom), and I can see why. Even the mango chutney was the best I’ve ever had, with a delicious hint of cumin to offset the sweetness. Me and my dinner buddy shared the special goat curry and the dahl of the day. The goat was tender and oh-so-flavoursome, and the dahl was subtle yet delicious. The service is quick and friendly, the atmosphere is intimate and cosy, and the ceiling is really nice(which always scores points in my book). It’s a little pricier than a lot of other Indian restaurants, but with such great food it’s worth it.
