One of two awesome food halls I Know, but it steals the no#1 place by miles! AND it’s got a bar hello!?!

I dig Old Shanghai. It isn’t fancy by any measure, but a great little Asian food court with lots of different stalls so everyone can find something they like. Prices are cheap, with a mixed curry plate starting at around $ 8. Solid option in Freo for a casual cheap lunch of decent Asian food.

I come here quite a bit, whenever I visit Freo. It’s a great option if your on a bit of a budget but still want to have delicious food. They have a Taka(Japanese), Chinese, Indian, Thai etc. This food court is also licensed so you can also purchase an alcoholic drink. There is plenty of seating inside and out and if you sit outside you can watch and hear what ever entertainment they have just outside of the Freo markets.

There’s always a great atmosphere around Old Shanghai on a Friday/Saturday evening as the markets buskers often make an appearance and children make friends playing hide and seek in the nearby areas. The Japanese stall here is clearly one of the favourites as the line is considerably longer than others. If there is no line, don’t be fooled, it is more than likely because the day is nearly over and there isn’t many options left. The dimsum place is pretty good and their Shanghai dumplings are some of the best I’ve had(if not a little over steamed), they’re also pretty fast and getting your order ready. This is a great spot for some cheap Asian food, cheap(er) beers and good company without the need to dress up or bring ID. Although, speaking from personal experience, maybe don’t wear your thongs if you expect the urge to go for a few more in one of the many nearby bars.

Although this place is called Old Shanghai, most of my Freo pals know it better as The Upmarkets or, affectionately, Upchucks. This food court contains pretty much any variety of commonly available Asian food you could care to name, with an ice cream parlour and a bar added on for good measure. Personally, I like to head to the shops along the back wall, where you can pick up enormous, very satisfying spring rolls and curry puffs for two dollars each. Otherwise, I’ve had pretty decent food at most of these places. The Japanese joint on the left is reliably awesome and you can pick up a good teryaki chicken for just over a tenner. Everyone in Fremantle has eaten here a thousand times; it’s not amazing, but it’s cheap and reliable food.

If you like Asian food, chances are you’ll find something to tickle your fancy at Old Shanghai. With Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Vietnamese outlets all serving up staples of their respective cuisines, there’s plenty to choose from. Situated around a large open courtyard that spills out onto the street, the best thing about Old Shanghai is the nice, communal style of eating — everyone’s friends here. It’s not the best Asian food I’ve ever tasted, but it’s very affordable, comes in big portions and usually comes quickly despite how busy it normally is — plus it’s a good option if you and your companions can’t all decide on one type of restaurant.

Situated in the most ideal location for an Asian food market, Old Shanghai is the place to go for those who are famished after an exhausting stroll through Fremantle markets. Shangas, as it is affectionately known to it regulars, is a food hall that serves a small selection of affordable Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, japanese and Chinese cuisine. The atmosphere is incredibly casual, but the place is always packed so if you’re in a hurry order from the Bain Marie! There’s sometimes a wait on the food, but I’d you’re in the mood for something greasy, get some curry puffs from the Thai place on the left next to the entrance!
