THISSUPERMARKETISCRAZY! They always have live music… did you ever expect to hear that sentence? At first I thought, ‘why don’t they save the cost of the musicians, and put it back into savings for the customers?’, but then I started to admire the fact that this must be the ONLY supermarket in Australia that supports local music! In addition, the atmosphere is so fantastic, people come from miles around to shop here, meaning that the unique experience probably raises revenue. We drive from North Adelaide to this market — although it’s not for the whacky, amazing live musicians sitting in the fruit and veg aisle: it’s for the bargains. The meat is cheap here, the basics are fantastically cheap here, everything is cheap here. Perhaps because of their proximity to the amazing musicians, the fruit and veg is not cheap here, and I recommend choosing a different purveyor for your F&V needs… and, don’t go crazy and start buying all the lovely, fancy gourmet foods Frewville Foodland has on offer either, or you won’t save a dime… but if you are after great, cheap breads, meats, and household groceries, THISISYOURPLACE! (One star off for the poor showing on the F&V front!)

This supermarket is amazing! Shopping is a pleasure, the range of organic fruit and veg. Gluten free and other special dietary requirements is spectacular. The fruit and veg last SO long, and the organic range is not exorbitantly expensive, just slightly more than non organic. Organic bananas @ $ 3.99 a kilo today, and organic cherries at $ 10.99 are well worth the price. We had a beautiful coffee and watch the motorcycle toy run go past. Honestly this is such a pleasant experience. I’m giving the big 2 the heave-ho

Frewville Foodland stands out as one of the greatest local supermarkets in all of South Australia. Frewville Foodland consistently offer amazingly fresh produce as well as having a great variety of choice. The wait to pay is always short as there is an abundance of fast flowing checkouts. The gourmet meat section offers great options for everyone. Ranging from ribeye steak to the South Australian classic smiley-face fritz, your sure to find what ever suits your fancy. The cheese section is a personal favourite of mine. Not only does the cheese section have extremely helpful staff and great variety of produce, but every week one creative employee creates a witty sign that brings a smile to my face as I go about this usually monotonous task. My personal favourite sign read: ‘Sweet dreams are made of cheese, who am i to dis-a-brie“ Free parking is huge pulling point for Frewville Foodland. I’ve never had any issues finding a park plus I don’t feel like I’m competing in a marathon when I have to carry all my shopping back to the car. They appear to have an online delivery/pick up system established however I haven’t had a chance to test this out. I honestly don’t know how the Woolworth’s on the opposite side of Glen Osmond Rd survives. I cannot see any logical reason why after visiting this local supermarket anyone would ever venture back across the road.

I am a huge fan of Foodland’s, mainly because they stock the brands I love and the variety is huge compared to the Coles and Woolworth stores which aren’t quite as adventurous in the products they stock. The fruit and vegetables here are top notch, no dodgy orange tomatoes here! Staff are friendly and approach you(shock!) when you look a bit clueless and always point you in the right direction. Prices are good, there is always a special on one of the basics and as mentioned above the brand range is fab. I love walking to the milk section and having six different brands to choose from but still finding a good quality of «Own» brands. The café at the front of the supermarket is top notch with a nice range of rolls, pizzas, cakes and pastries to keep me happy and I loved dropping in here when I worked at the nearby Glenside Hospital for lunch. A great supermarket of a high standard, well worth a weekly visit.

When your local is this good why would even entertain the idea of going to either of the big 2? With a fruit and veg section that doesn’t smell like rotting food, is comparably priced to the Central Market stalls and which sources its produce from the likes of Virginia, Riverland and Adelaide Hills it’s a wonder this place isn’t attracting hords of Adelaidians from north, south, east and west! Admittedly, that’s the other great thing about Foodland Frewville — you can always get a park for FREE and you won’t be fighting a line up of people at the deli counter for some of their freshly packed selections of goat’s cheese, brie or smoky cheddar! Arguably, my favourite Foodland in Adelaide is at the newly built Henley Beach Shopping Centre on Military Rd but Frewville was my first and that always brings back fond memories… With a consistent range of food and drink as diverse and gourmet as your grandma’s collection of tea cups, but with prices that won’t hurt the hip pocket, I’d recommend you get your nanna trolleys out and trundle over to Frewville for some fine food at fine prices!

Unlike the continuing trend of the big two to create a sterile and uninspiring grocery shop some of the Foodlands in SA are taking a different tack and are giving you a gourmet experience whilst you collect the weeks supplies. This Foodland is one of three that are embracing organic produce, wider range of locally sourced produce and less demanding impulse buys. I will generally source most of my shopping from farmers markets and local butchers but for my main shop for everything I will come here to get all those other daily needs. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to support a local business but I do have a tendency to pat myself on the back regularly :)

I realise I’m reviewing a supermarket here, but there are two really, really good reasons. Reason One: I miss Frewville Foodland as my local supermarket. Seriously. The produce is always fresh, the range of product is staggering, and they carry stuff you just don’t find in the big chains. Reason Two: They have this little ‘café’ section at the front, with the best Macarons I’ve found so far in Adelaide, and, also, the cheapest. I have found these exact same Macarons being sold as ‘hand made’ in a little coffee shop in a delicatessen, for nearly 50% more than here — which, ok, they probably are hand made, I’m not sure there’s a machine for making them yet — but the implication was ‘made by OUR hands’ too… I digress, they have a huge range of flavours, lots of stock, and they’re downright delicious. The rest of the café product is good, too… but the Macaroons… ok, can’t talk about them any more, I’m drooling thinking about it and they’re both closed, and twenty minutes away. The scariest part is the staff actually seem to enjoy working there, too — far be it from the stores where you feel it’s a chore for them to have to serve you, you feel valued here. THAT is really, really refreshing. P. S. When I lived nearby, if you could get in there between 10 and 11ish, you’d find all of the short expiry date product marked down — you can save some serious money if you shop smart right then — you may have to elbow a few particularly determined pensioners if you want the best bargains though :) P. P. S. Oh, and I see someone mentioned the store renovations — they’ve also renovated the car park — there is WAY more parking here than there used to be, and they’re decent sized spaces, too — I drive a barge, I need serious parking for it ;)

Whenever my Mum goes food shopping, I can be certain she’s most definitely heading to Foodland on Glen Osmond Rd(or the markets). This supermarket used to be so dark and depressing, but they’ve recently renovated, making it brighter and«happier», if you will. They even added a small café at the front of the store next to the checkouts where you can grab baguettes, pastries, coffee and other nibbles. I once bought a cappuccino and was surprised by how good it tasted. Impressive. The prices here are quite reasonable, compared to other big supermarkets. There are always sales and discounts on a wide range of produce. What I really, really love though about coming here is that they sell dutch cinnamon cookies! Oh my gosh, you don’t even understand how happy I was when I found them here. All this time I’d been making a painful journey all the way to the markets(I don’t live that far away, I’m just whinging) for those damn biscuits. Plus, there’s a whole couple of racks with imported foods near the deli section. It’s where you’ll probably find me rummaging away. Seriously, this place is a gem. With other hidden gems inside. If that makes sense. Come here and discover a world of rare foods!

Food shopping is not high up on everyone’s list of fun things to do(it’s on mine, but them I’m a little bit quirky). So, to hear so many people rave about Foodland means they must be doing something right. Friends that live in Norwood think they have the best Foodland. Same with those living in Mitcham. I’m a huge fan of my local at Frewville and this is my review, so I can say wholeheartedly, I think Frewville tops them all! I’ve been shopping here for six years and drop in two to three times a week. It had a major renovation in 2011 which has turned it from a daggy site with a great selection of produce, to a sensational, modern site with an array of quality products and a strong focus on local producers. Foodland are big supporters of South Australian products and offer a great range. The foodies I know will often shop here if they can’t make it to Grote Street(or can’t face the parking hassles) and I know why. I’ve picked up stuff here that I’ve never seen in a Woollies or Coles, such as Persian fairy floss or yiros meat in the freezer section. There’s even an entire corner at the entrance of the store dedicated to fine foods. The small goods and cheeses available rival the Central Markets(big call, I know, but I stand by it) and there is a dedicated organic fruit and vege stand at the entrance. The staff always have a great attitude and are of all ages and give the impression they genuinely enjoy their job. With the renovation they’ve introduced a mini café at the entrance that offers espresso coffee, lunch items(rolls, wraps etc) and biscuits and cakes. There are a few tables near the checkouts and despite their odd position, there is almost always someone sitting at one of them sipping a coffee or having a bite to eat as I leave. On the odd occasion when a special is too good to forgo, I’ll slip over to the nearby Woollies at Arkaba, but generally, you’ll find me here, supporting a local company who supports local small business.
