One fish, two fish, raw fish, smoked fish! You walk into Harris’s Smokehouse and it smells and looks like any normal shop. With a clean, white interior, displays of pre-packaged smoked salmon, trout, oysters and more, displayed in refrigerated cabinets, you could be fooled into thinking this is just your normal display isle of Coles. You’d be wrong. Go for the tastings on their front counter first. The plump, smooth oak smoked salmon will have you at the first gulp and then try their Smoked Salmon dip(one of my favourites to add to any antipasto platter and get guests to try and guess what it is). If you’re a history buff or fish enthusiast you can read some history on the wall and if you ask nicely, the team might even take you out back to show you where they do all the oak smoking, brine soaking and preparation for sale or orders into restaurants and homes around the country. This is premium quality fish and smoked products though people so you are going to pay a bit more, but unlike Pepsi and Coke, you will actually taste the difference. Skip the kransky rolls and head straight for the fish when in Hahndorf!

Is there anything better that a nice piece of Salmon, seared skin side down so that it is nice and crispy, and served with a simple garlic butter and dill bernaise? Hell yes there is! For one Harris’s Smoked Salmon! Why? Well, for one it tastes awesome, and for two(and this is the really important one) you can eat it straight away with out firing up the stove… BINGO! Harris’s Smokehouse in Hahndorf(next to the Inn, which is the best pub in the world) does one thing and they do it bloody well, smoke fish! You can find their various fishy goodness at a number of gourmet Foodlands and other outlets around Adelaide, for for the best selection(and to buy in bulk) the store in Hahndorf is the G.O. I have already let the cat out of the bag in the Smoked Salmon being my favourite but they also do Kingfish, Oysters and Haddock plus many others.

This is where I want to go when I die, and thankfully I can go there when I am alive also. Harris’s Smoked Salmon, it melts in your mouth like Salmon should, you need to get your hands on this fish and then your mouth on it. Sounds wrong but it is so right. They do pretty much every fish you can think of which is very convenient and you can also get your oyster fix here too. The great thing is that there are a number of places which stock Harris’s produce such as Fish Out of Water, Angelakis Bros, Cappo Seafood & even David Jones Fish Counter to name a few. Like anything that is amazing it comes at a price, and that price isn’t low but sometimes you have to reach a little deeper into your pocket in order to get a taste of luxury.
