What else to do at 11am on a Friday morning but to go wine tasting? I think wine is appropriate at every hour, especially good wine. Rockbare Cellars sells several brands, including Mojo, Alta and their own brand Rockbare. Mojo is one of my favourite wines– however, the lady managed to convert me in the half an hour I was in the shop. The building itself was a big brick building. You walk into the entrance then go down some stairs into the main room. I liked the massive drawing on the wall that showed the process of making both white and red wine. It’s not something you really think too hard about– but it is really interesting! One of my favourite wines is the Mojo Sauvignon Blanc. Hence, I tasted this again(ofcourse) but the lady told me to try the Alta Sauvignon Blanc. I was a bit hesitant wavering from my one and only, but it was soo worth it! This is now my favourite, a bit lighter in taste and a lot easier to drink(especially if you plan on drinking the whole bottle). The RockBare Cellars also offer the usual cheese and wine platter, which is very reasonably priced and includes some delicious cheeses from the surrounding region.

I admit, I don’t know too much about the old Vino, nor am I aware of every boutique wine maker in and around Adelaide. However, I do consider myself relatively observant, so to miss a cellar door in the main drag of Hahndorf(after I was only there 5 days before) came as a bit of a surprise. Rock Bare looks like a run down cottage from the front, but ‘behind door number 1′ is a couple of shabby little rooms… that lead to an expansive wine tasting room. The have gone for a deshevled chic approach to most of the rooms, furnishing simply with antique leather lounge chairs around fireplaces. The main area is far more modern looking, but still incorporating the old cottage features. To be frank(instead of George) I didn’t really like the wine too much. Although I rarely touch the stuff(costs too much to get pissed), I don’t mind the quality vinatges(I’m a snob waiting to be educated). Unfortunatley none of the drops on offer ticked the boxes for me, or my companions. I did bail fairly early and headed to the pub, so that may have had something to do with it.

This is a beautiful boutique winery on the main street of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. It was built in 1845 and is a great place to stop off for a tasting of the regional RockBare & Mojo wines and the Alta Vineyards range. Me and my mate popped in with the intention of a quick tasting to RockBare’s Mojo cellar door, next to the larger RockBare building, after lunch. But the wine was so nice and the guy who conducted the tasting was such fun we stayed until near closing time. He was really knowledgeable about each wine we tasted and was very unpretentious. I particularly like RockBare’s chardonnay, which is really fresh and fruity. We also popped into the main RockBare building to enjoy a tasting plate. Since our tasting, I like to pop in whenever I pass through Hahndorf and stock up on wine. RockBare also offers private tastings in Mary’s Cellar, a restored cellar from the 1800s. It has books, organic giftware and gourmet produce available for sale. You can even stay over in the RockBare retreat just behind the cellar door.
