Have been patronising this restaurant since 1998. The service has always been poor BUT the food and the prices were always great. However over the last 3 or 4 years the prices have been increasing and are now at a stage where I am looking for a Michelin star on the wall to justify the price. Still undaunted we have been returning in the hopes of experiencing the delightful food we were accustomed to. Sadly it now appears that even that has disappeared. Twice in the last two weeks we have taken a small group(5 and 6 people) and on both occasions we have had to send food back because it was cold. The rest of the food was very mediocre and poorly executed. I am afraid that we have decided that we will not be returning to this restaurant again.

I absolutely love this place, I am a creature of habit and have yet to explore the menus beyond the Mega Breakfast plate. Service is slow and at a pace that allows me to relax and enjoy the food. This is a must stop every time I’m in town.

Spending the day in Hamilton — a port stop on our cruise ship — we didn’t want to spend a lot on food. We had all we could ever want on that ship. But sailors get hungry and coffee junkies need their fix and we were too far from the ship to go back. There’s a lot to be said for curb appeal, and Vagelis had plenty of that — and coffee. We were somewhat dismayed by the high prices, though we’d already become accustomed to paying double what we’d pay in the U.S. Still… We decided to share a steak sandwich, which was a prime rib fillet, with grilled onion, lettuce, cucumber & tomato, and it was delicious, despite the fact that I like my steak medium-rare and my husband has his murdered. The coffee was terrific, too. Our waiter was very congenial, making for a perfect stop on a very pleasant walk around Hamilton.

This is a nice restaurant situated near the end of Racecourse Rd. The prices are a little expensive depending on what you order but the food is of a very high standard and the service is marvellous. Our entrees and mains were prepared within an average time and the waitress who looked after us was wonderful. She was super friendly and actually seemed genuinely happy to help. I’ve been here before and I’ll go here again. They also do a range of menus so depending on what you’re after impacts at what time you should go. We went for dinner this time but I’ve been for breakfast before and it was wonderful as well! Definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for a calm place with good service and slightly above average food and prices :)

We are visiting Qld from WA for a few weeks over the xmas/NY break and were meeting friends at Vagelis for brunch on Sunday morning… The general feel of the restaurant upon walking in is very relaxing and mostly comprise of wood furniture… it was quite loud and noisy in a full restaurant, but is great that the windows are all open to let the breeze through. We were meeting friends at 11 but unfortunately they were running a little late coming from up the coast… so wouldn’t be there until 11.30am… we decided to go in and have a drink anyway and then hopefully grab a larger table… We recognised that it was a full restuarnat so upon entering we mentioned that we were a party of 6 but they were running late… so we just wanted to order drinks first at a small table and then when a larger table was available we would move. Initially we sat at the bar tables they have along the front of the restaurant and the waitress told us it would be a 20min wait on a table — this was fine as our friends were 30 mins late. The service wasn’t the best… we waited 15 mins before someone finally came over to take our drink order… but the girl serving us was basically shouting at us and didn’t really listen to what we were saying… she was trying to move us again to a two person table but we explained that we needed a 6 person table… then she said that she would have to seat us in a function room not even in the main eating area because there wasn’t a table… we explained that we were happy to wait… that the previous girl said 20 mins and we were fine with that… then she ran off and didn’t even take our order until we had to call her back again — it was weird. Stressful! I really dislike it when people call their customers ‘guys’.e.g ‘so guys what would you like’ or ‘all i have is the table out in the function room guys’. I also heard the girl at the door call some elderly people ‘guys’ and it just sound so wrong. WE ordered a coffee frappé and a cappuccino… service was slow… we had already been waiting 15 mins to order… it was 11.30 when our drinks actually came out… 30 mins after we sat down. 30mins to get one coffee frappé and a cappuccino was a bit ridiculous… The cappuccino and frappé was about an 8.5÷10, but not worth the 30 min wait. By this stage our friends had arrived and we had been moved to a bigger table… the same girl who shouted at us came over to tell us the table was ready… and walked off… we said — should we follow you… and she said no I just have to clear it… then she changed her mind and said ‘I suppose’. Ok then. By 11.35 we had ordered our breakfast… which came out at 12.15pm — there was only 4 dishes as two of the friends were kids… and basically scrambled eggs with toast. I had the V mini which was 1 egg, 1 tomato, mushroom, baked beans toast… it was average for $ 10.95 and totally flavourless. I’m not sure how this place won best breakfast in Brisbane… I’m wondering who actually voted for this? Anyhow given the slow service, disorganisation and people shouting at me… def not going back… there would have to be other places in Brissy for a great breakfast.

Vagelis is not a bad restaurant and café. It is quite good in a lot of ways. The prices are very affordable and reasonable and the service is usually above average. The food is really good especially for a light lunch of afternoon coffee. I like coming here occasionally in the afternoon on the weekend. You can go for a wander by the river and then come back for a coffee and relax. A great combination on a nice day.

We grabbed a quick dinner here before going to see a show at Front Row Theatre and I really enjoyed the food. We both ordered from the Salads menu — not that the dishes are really just salad, they had so much more in them. I had the Loukanika(greek lamb sausages) while my friend had the Cheese Saganaki(haloumi cheese). Both of these dishes came served with pita bread, tsasiki and greek salad and were both really filling and good value for $ 17.95 THe Wild Oats Rose was really nice and $ 7.50 a glass. All in all, a fairly affordable dinner option on Racecourse Road with lots of seating out on the covered verandah.

Ok I’m going to be honest here; I’m a bit of a breakfast snob. I like my eggs poached and I like to be surprised with a unique ingredient(even if it’s something simple like marinated mushrooms, slow-cooked tomatoes, home-made baked beans; whatever). Finding a saucer of tomato sauce on my plate is a not-so-nice surprise and instantly rings alarm bells; if it needs sauce then the ingredients mustn’t carry enough flavour within themselves. Also, I’m not so much of a fan of a full breakfast which looks and tastes like something anyone can make at home. Sadly, this is what I found at Vagelis. We ordered two«Mini Breakfasts»($ 7.95 each) which came with a slice of thick buttered white toast, one grilled tomato, two rashers of bacon, a fried egg, chipolata sausage pierced onto the egg with a toothpick and a single piece of lettuce as garnish. Oh and the tomato sauce, of course. Not having a choice of how I wanted my egg done irked me somewhat, but it was still nice and runny, so I was content. Don’t get me wrong — it was a tasty meal, and a cheap one at that, it just didn’t ‘wow’ me.

Walking through the front door of Vageli’s café and bar is just like stepping into the Mediterranean. Wrought iron sculptures decorate the walls and grape vines hang from the ceiling. The restaurant is open and bright with soft colours, the atmosphere is pleasant. Full table service is provided by the friendly staff and you are able to dine indoors or alfresco. My favourite dish is the Cheese Saganaki, a delicate slice of grilled haloumi cheese which is served with fresh tzatziki dip, warm pita bread and a fresh garden salad. I love the squeak of the haloumi cheese and the added tang from a drizzle of lemon juice. The prices are very reasonable and you can pay cash or card. If you are heading to Vageli’s for breakfast on the weekend it is best to book ahead — they are famous for the breakfast menu and have won the ‘Best Breakfast Restaurant in Brisbane Award’ four years running!
