Go here if you want poor service, disgusting food, and a 1hr wait for Entrees. Food was tasteless. All the curries were made from the same base. Waitress. There is only one was useless and refused to clear entrée plates and drinks. We left 5 mins after mains were served. Total waste of $ 120… This is a review from an Indian person who knows Indian food. This is NOT authentic Indian food!

True to their name, Chillies do some decently spiced curries. I have a bit of a rule of thumb with advertised spice levels, which coincidentally works for steak as well… Confused? Let me explain. If the menu says ‘Hot’ it’s usually a hedged bet. They don’t want to hurt the pride of spice-posers who think they can handle the heat by dishing up something that they can’t enjoy, so usually its medium at best. You can remedy this by dropping a wink and the words«Indian hot thank you», but you might get more than you bargained for… Where does the steak come in? Well similarly, some people might think they like their meat bloody only to be turned off when it comes out and it’s actually a little raw in the middle(that’s right guys, that’s what rare means). So the consensus-ruled restauranteur usually ups rare orders to medium rare… Anyway, I wanted to test the accuracy of Ruby’s Chillies’ spice barometer, so I ordered the Sindhi Chicken ‘Hot’(note not«Indian hot») and was pleasantly surprised to be served a curry with a genuine kick of heat. The sauce was a rich tomato and onion gravy, the chicken thigh pieces were flavoursome and well-sized and I left with a pleasant lingering burn in my mouth. Well done Ruby!

Not everyone can handle Indian food but the folks at Chillies have attuned the dishes to western tastebuds, kind of. The dishes still have a lot of spices and, yes, chilli too but those well versed in authentic Indian cuisine will know the difference. Not that this isn’t authentic Indian. It is. Just a little tamed down though. I only give this place 3 stars because I feel the price can be a bit high for the serving size. However, on Sundays to Wednesdays they have a pretty good dinner deal. For $ 20 per person(for 2 people) you can get a vegetarian or meat appetizers, two curries, one large rice and two pappadums and two pieces of plain naan bread. Also, if you order a curry before 2pm weekdays they will give you an order of plain rice for free. The place has a good atmosphere and would make a good place for a date night or a casual get together, though the best time to be there would be for dinner. I did experience a bit of a wait for the food to come out even when it wasn’t too busy but I don’t know if that’s a norm or maybe they were just being more attentive. Still, I think this is a good place to try out if you’re in the area.
