Nothing especially standout about this little café. I appreciate that it had gone for the hipster theme as many cafés do but Goldilocks actually pulls it off. I get the impression, however, that Goldilocks is a shadow of its former self. From what I’ve heard it was quite good a couple of years back but has since then gone downhill. From my experience here, I would tend to believe those criticisms. I was in for lunch and a couple of coffees with the family. I had my usual favourite lunch meal of smashed avocado which turned out to be satisfactory. I enjoyed it but it didn’t impress me that much. The coffee is the thing that really let me down. Whoever was on the grinder did not know how to adjust to suit the temperature because the day I stopped in was a rainy day in the middle of a summery week. So, my flat white arrived somewhat over extracted and blunt in flavour. It tasted like what you’d get at home with a kettle, milk and some Nescafé. Verdict, not the best I’ve come across.

We stumbled across this alleyway café this weekend(tucked in behind Firechief restaurant off Camberwell Road) and was pleasantly surprised! This is the second ‘alleyway’ café to appear in Camberwell, further developing the alleyway scene which used to be an inner-city only experience! Funnily enough the first café to do this in Camberwell named ‘Coffeehead’(located near the train station) is owned by the same owner, which should be obvious when comparing the two cafes interior design(both have a similar warehouse feel). The setup is nice, the coffee lovely and we also tried some of the Banana and Chocolate loaf which was great, though this would have been perfected if they’d warmed it to make the chocolate more gooey :) I’ll definitely be visiting again for a breakfast, lunch or coffee hit in the future.
