I like carbs. Carbs like me. I like Bread and Jam for Frances as a consequence. I came in here on a Monday afternoon once to grab a soy chai latte and drool over the cake display. The service was prompt and efficient, the soy chai latte milky and smooth and I managed to avoid the bakery items. Miracle.

Want to spread the word about a great new bar/restaurant in chapel street, Prahran. Yawn !!! But wait, You have not seen the likes of this place before. Where can you go on a Sunday afternoon between 5 and 8pm and listen to the coolest jazz in town for the price of a drink, coffee or tapas? I did yesterday at The Globe, 218 Chapel Street. The food was imaginative, there was plenty of it, the price was right and the Jazz worth crossing town to listen to. They are the new kids on the block and I wish them luck as not too many places do it so well. Melbourne’s top rated jazz musicians play there so you can’t do better than charge your batteries for Monday at The Globe.

Yes, what a superb little café. Can’t go wrong with baked goods from Dench, and the service was warm, friendly, attentive and most of all quick, even at a busy Saturday arvo lunch. Nice high ceilings make the space seem larger than it is and maybe is helps keep noise levels to a minimum somewhat even when it’s packed inside. I had the three egg omelette with chorizo, and it was pretty tasty. Served on sourdough toast and a side of dressed rocket, simple yet amazingly satisfying. Mocha I had was very smooth too. Try the almond croissant, it’s good too.

What a treat! What a marvellous little find! A gem and a half. All these phrases and more I reserve for this quant little space that continues on from Readings Book store on Glenferrie Road Hawthorn. Grand arched windows, painted in solid black, sit stark against the all-white walls. The ceiling is church-like high, lending the café its relaxed vibe. This is the perfect place to visit when you’re feeling like eating at home outside the home. What? That’s right, I mean simple, homey food that someone else will cook for you. The flavours of each dish are matched really well, and there’s a heavy reliance on the high quality of fresh produce. Most meals are laid across Dench’s bread — a nice touch. Great for oldies, great for kids, great for teens. Wonderful atmosphere, lovely staff; it’s going on my list.
