I want to hide in this cocktail dungeon forever. Ash & Besters lies in the belly of Ethos Eat Drink, one of the restaurants I won’t stop talking about ever. In the second half of 2014, Ethos kind of… exploded out into a bunch of other bits and pieces, and one of those glorious bits was Ash & Besters. When I say«in the belly of», I mean it – A&B is down a winding staircase from the restaurant and into the basement, where beautiful stone walls are just the start of the serenade of this place. Everything is beautiful. I want to touch everything. I’m sure it’s not something in the air conditioning, because even when the air conditioning’s not working, I still want to touch everything. The cocktail list is a few pages long and each drink has a story, an ingredients list(mostly local bits and pieces, sticking to the Ethos ethos) and a great name. You can pull up a chair down here either before or after your Ethos dining experience, or you can just lurk here for the whole time – you don’t have to have a booking at the restaurant to drink here, but you do have to walk through the restaurant to get here. What’s also fun is getting here at 6pm when they first open, then emerging up into the full restaurant later. You feel like you’re being reborn. People look at you kind of weird. Yes, perhaps you’re drunk. Go home.
