Parliament Creative Co-Working

Once you’ve conquered three levels of stairs, the space is gorgeous. High sloped ceilings, exposed wooden beams, funky (and surprisingly sturdy) cardboard stools and shelves, and maybe my favourite bit: the round meeting room, featuring a round, sloped ceiling with natural lighting and a round table and even curved doors (because it’s ALL ROUND). Up on the mezzanine is a small kitchen space and a chill out zone with a high proportion of beanbags. The big wooden workspace desks all have power cables, the protected wi-fi’s quite decent, and there’s a printer/​scanner/​fax available for use (5c B&W/10c colour per printed sheet).
The views are a little bit gorgeous, too. Very typical Hobart – Parliament Creative’s a block back from the water but from the third level of 11 Murray St, if you’re not looking at beautiful green leaves or lovely old buildings, you’re looking at the harbour. Delightful.
Parliament Creative Co-​Working offers competitive scaled rates for remote working, whether you just want to drop in for a half-​day ($ 25) or sign up for a full month of working days ($ 450/​month for fulltime Monday-​Friday access, or «Always» membership). There’s a current special intro rate of $ 150 for your first month of co-​working, which gives you full five day a week access for the price of a standard «Casual» (one day a week) monthly membership. Parliament’s billing is month-​to-​month, and you can downgrade or upgrade membership as you need it. The Parliament team are also in talks with a couple of other co-​working spaces around the country, so there could be some benefits on the horizon for travellers, too.

I love working at home as much as the next person, but sometimes when you haven’t changed out of your pyjamas in three days and you’re ready to strangle your husband over his dislike of communicating via chat when you are only a room away, it’s time to get out of the house.
Sure, you could go for a nice brisk walk, perhaps do some exercise, or go eat an ice cream, but I prefer to lock myself in a room with strangers and get some fucking work done.
Parliament is a lovely environment — rather picturesque (is anything in Hobart NOT picturesque?) with the view over the docks.
It contains all my essentials: wifi, power, a printer, a kitchen with a sandwich toaster AND some bean bags. There are more things, but I don’t pay attention to them.
Their T&C’s boil down to «don’t be a dick», and they are reasonably priced for casual visits or ongoing subscriptions. No contracts. Just nice people.
So when you need to get some fucking work done, head down to Parliament and enjoy the company of other people, also working.
