I’ve been here a few times now, and I think the reason I go back is not because the food is particularly excellent, but because it’s decent food for a very decent price. Most meals are around $ 10 – 12, and the servings are HUGE, so I usually end up getting takeaway and stretching the meal over two days — Excellent value! It’s mostly very generic Chinese food, both in taste and in variety. But the value is good, which I think keeps a lot of people(students especially) coming back. It can get quite busy at lunch time, so if it’s a busy time of the semester, be prepared to wait a bit!

Wow. Talk about underwhelmed. Let me tell you how hungry was. It was about 4:15pm, and I had worked a short shift at work, so no lunch break. If anyone had a horse nearby, it would not have been safe. I decide to try somewhere different, so I rock up to Yuan’s Wok. I ordered the honey chicken. I was 15 cents short in cash so had to pay eftpos. No problem, except there is an eftpos surcharge. Not wanting to go find an ATM I went ahead and paid the extra, making a mental note to never return, no matter how good the food is. Well, I needn’t have worried. The honey chicken was more deep fried batter. If there was chicken in there, I didn’t taste any. You get a choice of steamed rice, or you can get fried rice for an extra dollar. Well, it WAS fried rice. With nothing in it. They had boiled up some frozen corn and dumped that on the side. The only flavour appeared to come from the shaker of something I saw being liberally applied to the rice. Salt? MSG? I don’t know. Despite being extremely hungry, I didn’t even make a dent in the food, it was that bad. There was plenty of it, and I have enough left overs to reheat, but I think it’s going straight to the bin. By far the worst food i’ve had in Kelvin Grove, and when you’re comparing with the refectory up the top of the hill, that says a lot. Excuse me, I’m feeling rather unwell after that ‘meal’.

Great value for money, large portions with very reasonable prices as well. Food is quite authentic, similar to what you’d find at Sunnybank.

This is a typical Chinese take-away joint aimed at QUT Kelvin Grove students. Yuan’s Wok is pretty standard fare, but the prices are especially reasonable what with being on campus and all. Like the previous reviewer said, ambience: nil, but the tummy-filling factor is high. There are lots of choices including vegetarian options, and I’ve found that the chefs are very happy to customise your food if you want it without something or with extra something. If you’re at uni in the Z block computer labs one night and feel like some pan asian cuisine, Yuan’s Wok is a good choice. Well, I mean… it’s your only choice, but still it’s pretty good. Rather than eating in, I recommend asking for plastic cutlery and taking your food over to the park across the road where you can have a little Chinese picnic with your uni pals and drown your respective assignment woes in soya sauce. My friends and I spent many a night gobbling down noodles from Yuan’s Wok, and I’ll always remember it fondly.

Yuan’s Wok is located within Kelvin Grove village right next to the local shopping centre within QUT. I would comment on the lack of atmosphere and lack of any sort of ambiance but it’s not a place for romantic interludes or aesthetics. It’s a place to shove some food that’s not completely terrible into your mouth for as little money as possible. It’s a student restaurant and it caters for people who have so little money that I wouldn’t be surprised if their clientele were the very same people making and serving the food. The menu selection is surprisingly large but I’ve never thought of that as a valuable commodity for a restaurant. I fear a wide array of selections as I place fear with making an erroneous choice. That being said, all the usual Chinese dishes are here and then some. While I haven’t tried everything, I did have a fair wack out of the stir fry section and I can tell you it’s all fairly decent for the price. For $ 10 you get enough to feed a one-man army and that’s not bad. The staff are incredibly accommodating and friendly and you can take-away, as well as dine in. I recommend the former, as it’s probably the sort of food you’d eat watching TV on a Friday night.
