They were closing and they stayed open to fix me up a frankly fantastic Bento box packed full of all the things I wanted at 9pm on a school night that wouldn’t leave the same grease stain of shame and regret that the alternative, hot chips from up the road, would definitely have done. It’s cash only, meaning I had to skip the ATM, but I made the trip fun by skipping, which I haven’t done since my time as a cheerleader at high school. Go Jaguars! The nigiri, awesome. The teriyaki chicken, awesome. The sushi, awesome. The seaweed salad, you better believe awesome. The only not awesome thing was the side dish of vegetable salad, which was just a container with iceberg lettuce and tomato pretty much. Shoulda stuck with just the Bento, because it was the business.

A great, affordable take-away option, only a few seats and bar stools so not exactly a dine-in restaurant. The sushi rolls are fresh and are great for a quick bite. The udon and donburi dishes are hearty, home cooking type of dishes. My only complaint is the sauce is on the sweet side and added sugar in Asian dishes is a pet peeve of mine.

Oh Kirrakaze, why don’t you open on a Sunday? So often I crave your fresh sushi rolls and hearty noodle soups on a lazy Sunday when I can’t be bothered to cook. But this is a but a small fault, and I will not hold it against you. Don’t ever leave Kirrakaze, Kirribilli needs you.

This surprising little sushi bar belies it’s unassuming look with decent sushi at a decent price. I popped past for dinner, and was a little disappointed at the small size and lack of seating space. I think they may have been closing up(just before 8:30), and I suspect this place is more for the lunch crowd then dinner. I ordered the Salmon Box(take-away) which was well prepared and freshly made. I was a bit surprised to see some pieces of Prawn sushi in the box, as I had asked previously what was in there and had been told«Salmon». Still, the prawns were not bad, although I personally would prefer them without the Japanese Mayo on them. Overall I would say that whilst it was not the best in Sydney it was quite good for the price($ 10), and I would definitely return. I will finish with the note that there were some outdoor seats, however these had been packed away, so I headed down to the park to eat it under the Harbour Bridge. I suspect if you popped past at lunch you would be able to sit either inside or outside(as one other reviewer has noted).

The name might be a not-so-PC take on the term ‘kamikaze’(accordingly, a feature has been made of an airplane propeller on the wall beside the kitchen) but Kirrakaze is nonetheless a very worthwhile stop for awesome, freshly prepared sushi. Sydney is swarming with sub-par takeaway sushi joints, but this place doesn’t make any of the typical blunders when it comes to maki rolls — you won’t find their rice waterlogged, their soy sauce diluted and sugary, or their fillings top heavy in a sly attempt to appear generous. Customers can watch everything being prepared in front of them behind the low counter, and fresh sushi is regularly made throughout the day to top up their display case(which has the added benefit of bypassing crusty rice ends. Ick). Most importantly, you can tell their fish is good quality and fresh — never sinewy or gluggy. It’s impressive that such a tiny place can offer so many different dishes, from beef udon noodle soup to tempura veggies. Sushi fillings are simple yet delicious — try the raw salmon and avocado or teriyaki chicken with a little bit of shredded lettuce.

In amongst boutique florists and artisan chocolate shops is Kirrakaze. Safe to say Kirrakaze is blessed by its surrounds as the sushi bar itself isn’t exactly flash. That said, this is exactly what Kirrakaze is about. No fuss, quick, fresh sushi served with a smile. It is the perfect place for a lunch stop, or if you’re looking for a healthy take out dinner option this is the perfect place as these guys also do udon soups. The sushi sells out fast during the week, attracting a lunch crowd but if you want something specific then they will more than likely whip it up for you on the spot! Sushi rolls are on average $ 3. My pick is to splash out on the tempura prawn roll for an extra $ 0.50 — delicious!
