Had no choice but to try this place out one late night when everything else was closed. From the outside, we has no idea of the pleasant surprise and the rare find we were about to experience. Brilliant thin base square pizza, perfectly cooked and served. Been back when I was in the area again today. Good to see nothing was changed.

Joe the owner is great and so very friendly. We enjoyed our gluten free pizza and a conventional Super Rio. Will recommend to our friends and family!

We lived in Milsons Point 15 years ago and the pizza is still as good now as it was back then! Same owner, same friendly staff and same awesome smell. When we visited we were delighted to see the owner still charming customers, waiting tables and hustling the kitchen staff to serve his guests. The super rio is my fave and love the square shapes. As a GF person I was also delighted they catered for this and it was hands-down the best GF pizza I have EVER had! It is the old style real italian pizza — nothing fancy just delicious. Highly recommend you support this local business and treat yourself to either the super rio or the rio special — your tastebuds will thank you.

Favorite by a country mile. Eat here often, on first name terms with the staff. Ever reliable. Friendly personable service.

I have a soft spot for this pizza joint. It’s got character. The bare tables and B-Y-O-Anything atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, and the merry staff are always chatty with the endless stream of regulars. Aside from the unique square bases this is traditional pizza — that’s not to say Napoli traditional, but Friday night with a footy-game and a foil-wrapped garlic bread traditional; simple combos that make sense instead of strained gourmet monstrosities. The toppings are never oily or cheese-drowned, and the fresh bases are perfect: neither cracker-thin nor dense and bready. As I say, you can eat in — they might even give you a plate — or go for home delivery, but this is the definitive Australian take-out pizzeria: it’s warm and bustling and heady with mouth-watering smells of the pizza oven. The perfect place to duck in for a cameo before everyone’s sacred night of indulgence: pizza night.

«You’re the girl who lives on Upper Pitt Street!» a guy once exclaimed to me in a bar in North Sydney. He had that I-know-I-know-you-from-somewhere look about him. An awkward 20 second silence ensued, then — ding! — a little lightbulb went on as I realised he was the front counter guy from Pizzeria Rio. Let’s quickly gloss over the fact that I ordered pizza so often from my local woodfire joint that they recognise me out and about, and focus on the impressive aspect of this evening encounter: the service factor. Clearly, these guys pay attention to who prefers their ‘Venice’ topping chicken-free — leaving a delicious and vegetarian combo of artichoke, mushroom, pesto and olives — with an oh-so healthy side of garden salad.(Yes, that’s also me). I love that they use a homemade tomato sauce as well as low-fat mozzarella in toppings to help you out on the guilt front. And how can one possibly not enjoy a pizza that arrives to your door in the shape of a square? To your door on Upper Pitt Street, that is.
