Tiger Corner Shop

I had an audition at the SCA, that’s the Sydney College of the Arts in Rozelle. It was an honours project, a sexploitation film called Kinky Cousins, set in the seventies.
I began the short walk from my house to Rozelle early one morning, I got dressed up in my most seventies outfit and gelled my hair. Then when I was about half way, a realisation struck, I forgot to brush my teeth, in all the excitement and rush of getting out of the house I had forgotten to do the most basic of tasks.
The Crew Cuts playing through my iPod, I began to panic, I didn’t bring my wallet, I was an empty pocketed individual, I couldn’t go home, I didn’t have time. I didn’t want to jeopardise my chance of getting this role because of some bad breath, if I was going to jeopardise it with anything it should be my bad acting. (Editors Note: This is a self deprecating joke, if you’re a film maker and you want to cast me, don’t take this as a testimonial of why you shouldn’t.)
The acting Gods were shining on me that day, for out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a pink note lodged in the gutter. I five dollar note. «Yoink!» I said as I picked it up and searched for a corner store on the way.
Tiger Corner Store it was called, a small and basic little shop on the main road, I rushed in, past the magazines, past the general foods, the ice creams and the newspapers. Straight up to the gum rack and I purchased some gum.
The middle aged man behind the counter, my saviour for the day, with his bright smile and available chewing gum. A reliable shop despite its faded exteriors.
I won that role and the film was good, the photos NSFW, the corner store, perhaps the reason why?
