Don’t make the mistake I did by going up just one level and thinking you found the store and been shocked by every shirt is $ 300+, just keep heading upstairs and you can raise your jaw from the sticker shock just one level below. My style is usually minimal and this store hits all the dots and considering average prices in Oz this place is quite reasonable for quality clothing and good style. I am going to Berlin and Sweden soon, and I got inspired from some of the labels to look out for on my trip. The hidden factor makes me feel just that bit more special, since I walked by this place who knows how many times without realizing its presence.

Somewhere is a men’s and women’s fashion store that sells clothing by local and international designers. It also has a gallery space that showcases the work of emerging Australian artists. The clothes at Somewhere are sleek, simple, and very on trend. The menswear section is mostly stocked with jeans, chinos, plaid shirts and pocketed t’s. The prices range widely, but in general, it’s quite well priced when compared to many of Melbourne’s similarly styled and themed fashion stores. Somewhere also has a very decent selection of shoes and accessories, like hats, ties, sunglasses and scarves. The staff are great(helpful and attentive, but genuine with their recommendations and not pushy).

You could credit Somewhere for starting Melbourne’s obsession with Scandinavian basics. Back when Europe was decking itself out in colourful and clean chinos and Ts, this upstairs store was ahead of the game locally, stocking affordable labels from the far north such as Suit, Kostym, Cheap Monday, Dr Denim and Gram when it opened in 2009. It’s still miles ahead of the rest when it comes to picking up well-made, more-interesting-than-General-Pants pieces for prices that won’t make you cry. And it carries a decent amount and range of stock, from men’s and women’s tops and pants to shoes, sunglasses and other accessories — even the odd book. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful(not at all rude, unlike some other CBD boutiques) and there are soft leather couches down the back with mags for when your friend is taking a million years to try on a million things. There’s also a small gallery attached, exhibiting emerging local artists. And you’ve gotta love the pink-lit staircase.
