I am sad — tonight the claypot BKT at Sugarbun was underwhelming. The broth was weak with flavour, over-salted and filled with bland pieces of pork. Your rice was overcooked too. Mushy and gluggy in my mouth. I have had great BKT here at Sugarbun in the past. I hope tonight was just a once-off!

Walking about near China Town I wanted to try somewhere just off the main drag. This is where I came across Sugarbun. The décor and layout of the place is pretty cool, spread over two floors, but that’s for me where the coolness ends. My self and my dining partner ordered the Sarawak Laksa, chickies(fried chicken pieces) and some sort of meat balls in broth(the name of which escapes me). The chickies were ok, but the meatballs tasted processed and the broth was tasteless. The Laksa was horrible and I left most of it. All in all I would like to come back and try other choices, but on first visit I was not impressed. There’s definitely loads better places to try nearby.

Who would have thought to have such a lovely tasting Bak Kut Teh(Google if you don’t know what it is) in Melbourne? WHAT??? Okay, just 2 Saturdays ago, I visited Johor Bahru in Malaysia & had Bak Kut Teh after midnight. In my sleepy state, I was awaken by the smell of the strong herbal pork ribs base soup & unforgettable taste. Why am I telling you this, you may ask… You lucky people. You have that strong herbal pork ribs base soup in SUGARBUN… right here in MELBOURNE! Just for $ 15 a set. Place is easy to find along Russell street. And if there’s no seating, don’t fret, there’s more seating upstairs. Service is prompt. Quick & easy place. Will be happy to return. Would I recommended? Definitely a YES from me.

Some people may have the misconception that Sugarbun is a pimps lair, but I assure you that the only sex they’re selling is good ol’ Malaysian styled Bak Kut Teh(Pork Bone Soup). A clean and bright interior greets you as you contemplate getting the Dry or the Soup options. I’ve only ever had the Soup version, but I must say. DAMN… That is all. Protip: Get the offal option for +$ 3

Walked past this cosy little place and decided to try the chicken & mushroom stew lunch set. It came with coffee with thick condensed milk. The herbal stew was delicious, I actually finished all the soup. Coffee with condensed milk was rich & intense. Too bad there was not enough meat mushrooms. Waiter was very polite & helpful. I reckon this would make a comfortable place to sit down for long chats, but not if you’ve a big appetite.
