The amount of people turned away in front of me was amazing as cash only is the policy omg how they avoid taking pay wave etc is a joke! I saw at least $ 90 turned down in 15 minutes?

Surprised at the low ratings this place is attracting. I’m an annual visitor from Perth and they have a reasonable range of sushi and they have possibly the best vegetable pancakes I’ve ever encountered in the price range in Melbourne.

Tower Sushi is a towering mess. Serving an abysmal selection of sushi from just outside Flinders Station to what is an apparently — and inexplicably — adoring public. I did think twice about purchasing a few pieces of sushi from Tower but extreme hunger and the promise on Tower’s awning that it sold ‘Multi-award winning’ sushi finally persuaded me. Firstly, the selection of sushi on offer kind of sucks. I am a meat — but not a fish — eater and the only few options for me were teriyaki chicken, plain inari or some dry looking tofu monstrosity. Sticking to my belief that you can’t go too far wrong with chicken — or fried tofu — I opted for two pieces of the chicken and one inari. Ok, the inari wasn’t bad. A little on the small side and not as tasty and moreish as inari usually is but it was passable. Don’t even get me started on the chicken… You know those dodgy restaurants that have plastic replicas of their dishes on display so that you can see what your meal would be like if you ordered it — and it arrived rendered in plastic? THAT is what Tower’s chicken sushi resembles. The flavour? Negligible. I really don’t know how you can go wrong with rice, chicken and a shed load of soy sauce but somehow Tower Sushi manages. Heed my advice and go elsewhere. Tower does not deserve your patronage.

I’ve had some seriously sub-par sushi from Tower Sushi and I have no intention whatsoever of going back. I can’t quite figure out how or why this place is ‘Multi-award winning’ but I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been drawn in by the shiny sign. I guess at least the Flinders Street Station position is pretty handy. The ingredients aren’t fresh, the rice dry and the seaweed soggy. The range on offer is pretty average too. Don’t bother.

I can understand why there is such abrupt service here, the couple of times I’ve frequented I’ve heard people barking orders and throwing money across the counter. I have this little seditious streak that when someone gives me abrupt or quick service, I make it a point to be overly polite and kind to them, in hope to bring a little light to their day. I’m not to sure it worked on this occasion as the sales assistant quickly dismissed me to move to the next barking customer. This place services Flinders Street station and must be one of the busiest sushi joints in town. Most of their customers are mid commute and in a hurry to continue. The display cabinets have a range of sushi hand rolls as well as a few meat skewers and okonomiyaki. If it wasn’t for its location, I am sure this place would be nowhere near as busy as the food doesn’t make you want to come back. It’s obvious that convenience once again takes precedence over quality.

Even though Tower Sushi was an absolute lifesaver for me, I still cannot rate it that high. My friends and I were supposed to meet in Federation Square for a night out and because at the time, I lived close to the city I was there about 30 minutes before everyone else was and my stomach was GROWLING. I didn’t want to spoil my appetite with a full on dinner and didn’t have the cash for that either, so I turned to Tower Sushi. Customer Service: The guy who greeted me seemed rather bored. A little enthusiasm could not hurt when dealing with customers. Thankfully, all the sushi was premade so it was very quick and efficient. Food: They have a really generic sushi takeaway menu. Honestly, I’m a bit disappointed by the lack of variety, but with the basic nature of all of the rolls, it’s not difficult to find something you might like. I ordered 2 pieces of Seafood Inari which came out to be a little over 4 dollars and it was tasty, but I’ve definitely had better. It was perfect for a small meal to calm my stomach before dinner though! Tower Sushi is alright for a convenient grab-and-go, but don’t expect anything too nice. The food was decent, but maybe not that great for the price. I’d probably turn to this place again one day in the future though.
