I’d heard lots of good things about Sprout before I went. In fact two separate people had told me their friends had generally regarded it as the best place to eat in Newcastle, so I had to try it out for myself. What I got was a great meal, great service and surprisingly good value. The menu has a good selection of starters for 16 dollars, a selection of pastas which can be starters or mains and then the mains are 32. There is a lot of choice. And it’s all great. We had the squid pasta and smoked trout to start. The pasta was freshly made and the squid was perfectly cooked. There was a selection of hot and cold smoked trout with an exceptional salad. Also of note are the freshly made breads, served to start. The mains were again fantastic, lamb rump and shoulder, served with a potato scallop moulded into a giant chip and accompanying peas(and pea purée) and a perfectly cooked seared Salmon with eggplant purée and a chipotle ratatouille. The menu description didn’t do the dishes justice. The wine selection is small but the wines are all very good quality. These guys know what they are doing. Maybe not the best in Newcastle, but VERY close and definitely the best value. I’ll be back.
