Kelly’s On King

First pub I ever went to when I first turned 18 and I’ve been going to their happy hour ever since. Originally stayed because of their smoking area however after tasting their steaks and nachos I fell in love with the food. Although not one of the cheapest places to drink at Newtown, I really enjoy the atmosphere+food

This is a good Irish Pub in Newtown. There is always lively music playing all corners of the pub and the atmosphere is definitely… old pub. It is a good meeting place but more than that the food is quite good. I took a fussy eater to this pub because he couldn’t eat the food at another establishment further up the road. The other place was dearer and With white tablecloths and silver cutlery was more up market. Well my friend was so happy with Kelly’s. We had a good feed. By the way the mixed grill is huge… a little too much meat on the plate for me. but then again he was shovelling it down! The grog is reasonable. I bought a bottle of house wine for $ 20 .and not bad… better than per glass was $ 6 (which is still good for Sydney prices). So visit this place, not far from the station.

Can’t get more Irish in newtown than Kellys. Great place to go for a few bev’s. Came here for pub golf with the lads, the bar staff were great even being nice while we were doing our crazy challenges (such as not being able to speak to bar staff). We ordered 16 Jagger bombs and they racked them up and did a domino drop of all of the shots in to the glasses which was very cool. They building is great with multiple floors and court yard for smoking. If I go newtown for a night I defiantly go Kelly’s again!

It’s a meeting place, it’s an Irish Pub that is open very late. Can’t find your mates at 11pm in Newtown? Check upstairs at Kelly’s.
The Smoker’s deck is always always always packed out by about 10pm on Weekend evenings. It’s good people watching, and having visited this pub regularly over the past 15 years, I can safely attest to the fashion trends of the Inner west not changing very much until the Hipster movement reared it’s cardigan and croc wearing head. Have your anti hipstermines before you go there these days.
Karaōke. Yes Sydney’s worst drunken singers can be found here with a willing captive audience belting out in unison.
I’ve never actually eaten the food here, but they do a Sunday Roast which seems reasonably priced. Not sure how many takers they get considering it is on King Street where there are a plethora of other food options.
Guinness. Probably the best Guinness in the Inner west. About as close as you’ll get to a genuine pour.

It’s the only Irish pub along King Street. Which is rather silly, considering the amount of pubs along King Street.
We popped in for a quick bevvie on our way past shopping.
I have eaten here before and it’s great pub food, decent price and huge serves.
The beer is cold and hits the spot.
What more can you ask for in a pub?

When your low expectations aren’t met, you know you should walk on to the courthouse.

Generally the always the last stop of my pub crawls down King Street, Newtown.
Kelly’s is really a nice, cosy, casual bar to end your night with. There’s normally plenty of places to sit in the bar area or the two beer gardens.
When I went there was a guy playing guitar and singing some old favourites which actually kept us there longer than we intended. It was really great to sit and listen and end the night on a quiet drink.

I am convinced that trivia nights are made by those types of people who have rare random-​fact-​retaining brains to make the rest of us normal-​if-​not-​a-​little-​dumbed-​by-​beer brained people feel bad about ourselves when we can’t remember who was American democratic vice president in the election of 1980-​something.
Anyway, my friends wanted to go to trivia, so we went. We arrived late, so were forced to sit in the back where we couldn’t hear the announcer at all. I guess he’s pretty used to that, though, because he made it a point to come back and repeat everything to us.
The beer is good at Kelly’s and the clientele is rowdy if not a little rough around the edges. It’s a no frills bar with the charm of dingy wooden tables and tattered décor. It’s definitely been well loved, though not by me. I suggest visit Kelly’s, but don’t look closely in the corners or bring anyone you care to impress. Kelly’s is definitely a dive, but a dive done right.

Kelly’s became an occasional Thursday night hangout thanks to its often awful, sometimes soulful, always entertaining karaōke.
And although this may not be a draw card for some (it should be noted here that I have pretty dodgy hearing), Kelly’s had a couple of other endearing features that make it worth returning to:
* Two good beer gardens (smaller one out the side, larger one upstairs)
* Unpretentious and casual Irish pub
* Pretty cheap drinks
* Takes a lot to get kicked out of here (not that I’m suggesting you should push your limits, I’m just saying)
* Cool dark interior
* Next door to a late-​night pie shop — that pie man is smart I tells ya, smart.

I have walked past Kelly’s and kept walking, due to the strangling a cat type karaōke sounds coming out from the front door. It’s bad.
The only time I tend to go to this place is when it somehow turns up during the night, and common sense has been replaced by beer. There is an upstairs courtyard for the smokers, as well as a courtyard in the side street (the pub wraps around café C). The décor would be better suited to the mean fiddler. Lots of wood, upturned barrels to put your drinks on, tacky American bar style paraphernalia on the walls.

There’s so many pubs in Newtown that it’s quite surprising there is only the one ‘Irish’ pub there and Kelly’s on King is that one.
When you walk in you immediately realise it’s an Irish pub although the shamrock on the front door probably give it away before that. There’s some tables and barrels to sit around and have a pint with down stairs and also a TAB area for those hoping for some luck of the Irish.
Upstairs is a bit of a lounge bar and also a new outdoor deck that gets plenty of use and is quite popular for the late night crowd wanting a break from the live band downstairs or the pumping tunes upstairs.
There’s quite a nice bistro there too so Irish or not, it’s well worth dropping in for a drink and checking out Kelly’s on King.

Free pool Monday and Tuesday — if that won’t get you to the table then I don’t know what will. This is an Irish pub though and through. The interior is designed with dark wood and there are flags up and smell in the air of food and beer. There are screens for watching sport on too, if you so be inclined. This is the pub for the all rounder should be something for everyone here, Thursday night has karaōke and Happy Hour is a very generous $ 3.50 schooners everyday between 5−7pm.

Kelly’s on King street, is not a pub I go to for the alcohol, mind you I do drink alcohol while I’m there, but I go for the food as it is reasoably priced and delicious, with large servings.
The food is proper pub food, but of an excellent quality, they have bangers and mash, Steak and Guinness stew, Chunky Shepherd’s pie and lamb shanks, just to name a few. I had the Mixed grill, (sorry vegetarians), it was soooooo good, sausage, steak, bacon, lamb cutlet, mushroom, tomato chips and eggs.
The only thing I am not so keen on is most of the tables are made from converted barrels, which is aestetically a great idea for a pub, but they are awkward to sit at.
I left feeling like I was about to explode, but it was so worth it.
