St Brigid’s School & Cathedral

I just had to write about this building because my mother used to go to school here. Though she tells me the nuns were strict-​as, she says she loved studying in such beautiful surrounds. Indeed, the building is stunning: simple in its architecture — all bone-​brick and repeat arches and basic colours of red, gold and green for the leadlight windows — but built strong to have withstood the test of time and temperamental climate.
With its foundation laid in 1889 and originally consisting of a church, convent, presbytery and school, nowadays St Brigid’s is used for the occasional mass, and as the administration offices of the Sisters of Mercy.
I believe this to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Perth, and very prototypical of the popular Gothic Federation red-​brick aesthetic that began shaping the city’s unique look at the turn of last century.
And, yes, one day I may even get married here!

This is one of the most picturesque cathedrals in Perth. For as long as I can remember it has been a hauntingly, Gothic looking structure on the outskirts of Northbridge. I’ve been to a few weddings at this gorgeous church, and been in a few bridal party rehearsals at this place.
The high roof is reminiscent of any of the churches you would find in Pisa or Florence. They are churches of grandeur. The altar is stunning and the perfect place to say those vows. The acoustics really carry the wedding tune and any cheesy pop song you choose to walk down the aisle to.
