Holy. Cake. I’ll admit it, I went in for a savory snack(it’s tough to avoid this picturesque café on Queen Street), but was immediately diverted by the large window of cake. It practically reached up, smacked me around, then hugged me in a warm, buttery embrace. And I couldn’t get enough. Seriously, I picked up three(THREE!) slices of cake to take away — the gluten-free almond orange cake, the lemon-lime tart and the tiramisu. Okay, so I also got a soft, almond finger biscotti dipped in chocolate. Let’s be honest — I was completely blinded by their dessert science, so don’t expect this to be a balanced review by any means. But if you’re looking for cake, Zigolini’s cake will make you want to shove as much as you can straight into your face and take the bits that can’t fit and rub it directly onto your skin.

I have a completely rose-tinted view of this restaurant because I visited it at the most perfect time. Sunday morning brunch, the sun shining, a group of friends round a table outside and a fair happening in the gardens infront of us. Heaven. The breakfast and lunch menu was really diverse and had a little something for everyone whether you were after some sustaining fried stuff or more nutritious whizzed stuff! I arrived late to find a friend tucking into the most delicious looking French bread which had been drizzled in maple syrup, and decorated with almonds and berries. Everyone else had clearly had the same idea as it was sold out. I had mango and coconut toast instead and it was wonderful. So thick I didn’t have to eat again til supper, and so rich and buttery I felt naughty indulging in it for breakfast. The prices are quite reasonable for such a lovely spot, I’m going to start reserving one of those outdoor tables every Sunday brunch from now on!

Nestled on the gorgeous, tree lined Queen street, Zigolini’s is a great spot to catch up for a quiet coffee. The charming George not only makes a delicious coffee with a cheeky smile, but has a great knack for remembering your choice of brew. It’s a relaxed café environment, European in feel, and the service is quite European like too — with it’s laid back service style and speed. No one here is in a rush, so if you’re impatient, hungry or in a hurry best go elsewhere! Though the food is your standard breakfast fare, the location really makes this a nice spot for a relaxed breakfast if you can nab a table outdoors in the sunshine. Or if you’re after a coffee to go, there’s a little side take-away hatch(they really do a great coffee).

Am I the only one that calls this place Ziggy’s? Maybe it’s because I go there so often that I feel like I’ve earned the right to assign this lovely café a nickname. If I could suggest one place to enjoy outdoor seating in Woollahra, it would be here. The European attitude of Zigolini’s is unmistakable, from the chairs(which look like they were stolen straight from Café de Flore in Paris) to the amazing menu. Ziggy’s is considered an iconic restaurant for its unique aesthetics, great coffee and bistro fare. The baristas here will whip up one unforgettable cappuccino for you. In fact, they use their own unique blend of coffee beans to do so. The Mediterranean-inspired menu changes seasonally to ensure that only ingredients of the freshest quality are used. Definitely grab a seat outside and face your chairs toward the street(the Parisian way) to watch the affluent residents Woollahra get on with their day. Don’t fret if all the seats are taken. The inside is a fine place to sit, among freshly cut flowers and rustic wooden furnishings.

Zigolini’s is one of the most visually enticing cafes in Sydney. There are a couple of tables outside but inside is more my preference(as well as a lot of other peoples) — you can sit inside faced directly towards the street where you get the benefit of the light summer breeze(there’s only ever a light summer breeze in Woollahra, controlling the weather is seemingly one of the benefits of being rich) and do away with the option of having to be part of the street scenery for curious onlookers. If you’re not facing toward the street you should be sitting to the side facing the customer carpark(do not worry, you still get a great view of people walking by) or sitting in a circular fashion with others facing the beautiful flowers in the center of the front café space(that is not at all as your mind pictured it and is actually quite nice). What you do not want to do is sit in the back room. I tried it and it’s not nice. Or, as nice. It’s more white, more empty, more reminiscent of some kind of detention room. The coffee and banana bread is my habit here but if you go for the food I suggest you go for the breakfast. Eggs are done really well here. The staff also warrant a mention. Everyone is nice here. One lady on a regular roster even asked about my mum. How many times do you see that?

Zigolinis is a long standing establishment in Woollahra which feels maybe a little bit too elite for its own good. You don’t get the feeling that you’re a loved customer. The staff aren’t particularly welcoming and sometimes it feels like they’re doing you a massive favour serving you your food. The foods not that great and it’s quite pricey. I’ve been there a few times for«lunch meetings» and it seemed we were not the only ones… when I was there it looked like many a deals were being brokered over the table. Mains cost upwards of $ 25 and take awhile to get to you — definitely not a place to visit if you’re in a rush… If you never visit here, you wouldn’t have missed too much.
