We Live Like This

‘We Live Like This’ is a sweet little boutique that focuses on local designer pieces. It may not have the largest selection but it has a lovely store owner that makes every shopping experience enjoyable.
I first discovered this shop when a friend of mine told me that the necklaces that she made were being sold at this store. Since I was intrigued, I went in to have a look. When I noticed my friend’s necklaces the owner of the store informed me how she likes to stock pieces by local designers to ensure all their works are unique. You can really tell that this store sells unique pieces. I do not think I am familiar with any of the designers but they all look like they are excellent quality and reasonable priced considering. The store does not sell much of each piece which has its perks as you know you will never run into someone wearing the same outfit as you. The only downside to that is if you find something you like but is not in your size, you have may not have that option.
So if you want to check out some local designer fashion pieces, «We Live Like this» is a great little boutique.

Their slogan is: «We Love — We Lust — We Want — We Need … We Live Like This». And it’s kind of apt.
The first time I came here, which was about 18 months ago, I was completely taken by a dress I’d seen — it had a photo print of a storm in Brisbane. On a maxi dress. It was incredible, a one-​off, and only about $ 300 for something so unique. At the time, seeing my expression of awe, the owner, Mekalie Bird, came over and explained to me about the designer, and the photograph, where it was taken and when. Making the experience just that little bit more personal and interesting for me. Of course I didn’t get the dress, and of course, for the next year and a half I kicked myself. (I’ve still got the bruises).
Mekalie is an avid supporter of antipodean designers too — she won’t stock anything not from Oz or New Zealand. Quite right too — if we don’t look after our own, who will?
She also doesn’t take on loads of pieces from each range — and has a quick turnover. So you’ll never have that «Who’s Wearing It Best» moment when you turn up at a party and see the same dress, only on someone taller, slimmer and hotter.
