Nice spot to stop for a coffee. Friendly service, tasty coffee and a beautiful outlook. Certainly can’t complain!

I thought I had already written a review for Beyond Basic, apparently I was wrong. I’ve come across to Port Melbourne a couple of times to stop in here. Both trips were made especially. I’m serious about trying out new coffee and new cafés. When it’s a top bloke such as Ken that is opening a new café, I have no excuse not to come. Now. It’s the coffee that is the main focus of this café. If you’re a fan of your typical stock-standard coffee, this place is bound to surprise you. The coffee at Beyond Basic is exactly that. You will not find basic coffee here. All you will find is Ninety Plus and luxury roasts from Monk Bodhi Dharma. The coffee rotates quite a bit, so you can always try something new. With the cup coming straight out of a brand new Slayer made by expert baristas. Exquisite coffee. The deco is interesting. Bright orange, blue and black all over the place. It is by no means a hipster café. They’re more interested in quality. Honestly, I’m not 100% sold on the orange paint but what can you do. I much prefer sitting outside. Fresh sea air from just over the road. What is not to love. Especially good on a warm day, sitting with a cold drip that has blueberries in it. If you’re into your coffee, you have to stop in here.

If you don’t know your coffees, then the staff are snobby and will serve you a cold latte.

Coffee geeks, listen up. There’s a new coffee joint opposite the beach in Port Melbourne and it’s hidden in plain sight. No rustic wood or scandy fit out. Terrible font choices and bright orange everywhere. The light fittings are nice, but a hipster joint this is not. An excellent place to enjoy coffee and breakfast, it is. I spied this in my Unilocal feed and it immediately peaked my curiosity. Speciality coffee at the beach end of Port? Where?! Walking in to this very suburban looking café, I was greeted with a brilliant looking ruby red Slayer and a menu of four Geisha filters on offer from Ninety Plus. Ok, so these guys probably know their stuff. A bit steep at $ 15 for a filter, but it’s 2-cup and you pay around the same at Proud Mary for these particular lots. I would like to see a filter option around the $ 5 – 7 mark, but there’s plenty of espresso choices for those who aren’t here to nerd out. I came back for an LB which was also sensational and $ 4. The staff here are super lovely and really, really passionate about coffee. I dig it. So much so that when my breakfast came out, I found myself wishing under my breathe for it to be delicious because I just wouldn’t have the heart to tell them I didn’t like it! I ordered the zucchini and corn fritters and they were delicious. Phew! I will be back. Regularly!

Delicious specialty coffee in Port. Tick! Superb single origin espresso, syphon & filter coffee on offer, some of the best coffee selections in the world. Brought to you from the dudes at Workshop Bros Specialty Coffee and Oak Room. Super awesome Slayer if you’re a coffee equipment geek ;) Kitchen offerings look yummy too, with fresh donuts and muffins made in-house. Ken & his team are wonderful. X
