Very nice friendly staff making an above average coffee, but for a European café to serve day old croissants on a Saturday morning? Unfathomable.

Service has improved over the past year or so and is absolutely great now. The steak(and seafood) on Friday and Saturday — eye fillet on spinach including a glass of house wine for $ 29. Steak is always perfectly cooked and their french fries are a perfect accompaniment. Atlantic salmon also available as a seafood option for this special. Try the Breakfast Bun for breakfast, yummy with the chorizo in it! Nice décor, nice food, nice prices, nothing not to like!

Great coffee, service with a smile, and reasonably priced food

The food always great, but the service is very average indeed. On separate occasions they have forgotten our orders(or part there of) and seem completely disinterested in being there. The food is the redeeming quality(and were it not for the service I would definitely give it another star!). The steak night on Fridays is always a winner if you can deal with the service.

Today was my first time at Moulin Noir, I was very impressed and can’t wait to go back. Here’s why: Service — prompt, professional, friendly and polite. The waiters being french was also a plus as was the full table service including the provision of water. Seating — plenty of indoor and outdoor french bistro style seating. Coffee — as a non coffee drinker I am unqualified in this area but my husband was loving his cappuccino so much he insisted I take a sip and I have to say it was delicious. Food — we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and were excited by the range of quality, high end brunch type options available. I had the best avocado and feta on toast I have ever had. The touch of basil oil/pesto was a great addition and the bread was spectacular. The eggs benedict was a slightly smaller portion than my husband is used to but in the end it was the perfect size as the hollandaise sauce was richer than the run of the mill hollandaise. There is also a special of the day. Dog friendly — there is ample room to have your dogs sit by your side on the footpath and there is a water bowl by the front door. Our boys really enjoyed their side of bacon. Ambience — Moulin Noir is just down from the corner of Bay and Rouse St so it is away from the traffic, which adds to the relaxation as you enjoy the paper and company of other like minded locals enjoying the quality setting. Value — at the slightly higher end of breakfast pricing but worth it Room for improvement — the only thing that would improve a visit to Moulin Noir would be the addition of a wind break.

I am a massive lover a coffee. So much so, that the day my housemate told me she took advantage of the $ 1 coffee deal at 7⁄11 the other morning, a little piece of me died. I have recently made the transition from drinking skinny lattes & cappuccinos to long blacks with no sugar… a fully fledged addict, yes I’m out and proud. I also have a habbit of dragging others down with me so if you’re not prepared to share in my addiction, please read no further. Give credit where credit is due. Ok, so this European Bistro is also a popular brunch, lunch and dinner spot but they make a dam good coffee and they do it well! There coffee is roasted locally in South Melbourne and you can smell the coffee blends freshly grounded wafting out the door, which keeps regulars like me coming back for my caffeine ‘hit’. Both baristas are experienced, love what they do and always welcome you with a smile. This is one of the few select places that I will buy my coffee from and I am rarely(if never) disappointed. They serve an extensive all day breakfast/brunch menu with a huge variety of both sweet and savoury options and regularly serve fresh baked goods on the counter & usually incorporate them into a coffee/muffin deal or similar. Every Friday night is stake night that is around $ 29, a little more than your average counter meal but the food is of high quality, the atmosphere is not that of rowdy average beer stained pubs and the service is next to none. This deal often includes a glass of wine.
