Androtis Seafood Cafe

While I don’t like cooked fish much, I went to the fish markets as a tourist experience that apparently must be had on any extensive visit to Sydney. The barramundi here tasted alright, but heavily battered. I don’t eat much cooked fish, so I assumed it was fully cooked, which my partner assured me it was. Later we were both sick, although not food poisoning, it was significant discomfort from so much oil. I know fish and chips are greasy by necessity but this was just overkill. I also hate having to pay for tartare sauce, and they also charged for tomato sauce here, but that is just my American nature thinking sauce should be free or included.
The whole fish market is crazy busy all the time, especially in the afternoon with tourists and families coming through, and particularly on the weekend. Nonetheless, there’s no excuse for the overflowing rubbish bins, which effectively spilled out onto the table. With absolutely no service, even to clear off the eating surfaces, I found myself bussing the trash from our eating space before sitting down, wiping the tabletop myself with a tissue and water, and purell-​ing my hands afterwards from feeling so gross. I am admittedly OCD but I think most people would find this place just gross.

It is almost unbelievable how bad the food was. They’re serving inedible seafood (two of the three things we ordered were left behind basically untouched) at the Sydney Fish Market — an internationally renowned fish market. The salt and pepper calamari was gross! It was cold, chewy, and flavourless. The grilled octopus was slightly better, but we still only had a few bites before abandoning it. The fried soft shell crab was actually pretty decent and was the only thing we finished. I was also annoyed at the $ 4 price tag for my Coke, but thankfully I bought it and could wash the taste of the food out of my mouth. This place was a big disappointment! We basically spent $ 30 for a soft-​shelled crab, two Cokes, and a slight stomach ache.
