Although we have lived near the Sydney Fish Market for a total of three years over two different moves, we had never actually checked it out. What a fun place to visit! We knew we wanted some simple fish and chips for lunch, so we decided to try this place out. We ordered their«famous» beer battered fish and chips, the tempura whiting and chips, sashimi plate, and the dry shucked oysters. The fish/whiting and chips were decent, but there was definitely room for improvement. While the batter tasted good, it was a very thin crust of batter and was a little too oily. The filets were a bit on the thin side as well. Chips didn’t taste like they were made in house. If I’m paying that much for fish and chips, my expectations will match it. I was a bit disappointed. The salad that came with it was a little different with capsicum and cucumbers, and I appreciated that. The oysters were good and came on a bed of rock salt, but the thousand island type sauce that came with it was served in a plastic cup. A little effort on presentation could have made it better. The sashimi was fine, but the salmon was cut in tiny little slivers. Like seriously, teeny tiny, roughly half or less in size of your standard cut of sashimi. I’ve lived in Japan. Never have I seen sashimi prepared in this way. Because of its cut, we probably got only 2/3rds of the amount of tuna the plate had(along with a plastic cup for soy sauce). $ 18 — you be the judge. The redeeming qualities: service was very friendly, food was made quickly, no shortage of high chairs or seating.

Easy to get a seat and straight up nice food. Over the years we have tried almost everything from here. We usually get some food here and mix it with sashimi & oysters. I like their soft shell crab. Don’t expect fine dining, it’s more like a really fresh takeaway seafood vibe.

Rudest place I’ve encountered in Sydney. They market themselves as «bistro and bar», but don’t be fooled. After a visit to the market, I wanted to sit down and enjoy a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. I ordered at the bar and was told impolitely that I couldn’t order that without food… And then was shooed away to get my own wine at another store within market. Australia is a great place with friendly people. This spot tarnishes the good reputation.

Regrettably, this was not a pleasant experience. The sashimi was lazy and fishy, the seafood platter had decent prawns and scallops, but the octopus hard and rubbery. The location is great, but I cannot recommend anything other than giving this a miss. Walk Around the market, enjoy the atmosphere, only eat at doyles if you are caught short and in a hurry.

Fish was good but service is terrible, not a table in the place was cleared(read mess everywhere) and the chips were easily the worst I’ve ever eaten. A real shame as other food places at the markets are far better.

Forget the fishy smell, and head over to Doyles! I was really excited to come to the Sydney Fish Market as I have been lacking seafood since being here in Australia. This place is hard to miss as it’s literally the first restaurant in the front when walking toward the actual market. My friends and I were just starving, and we just decided to eat here. The service is more of a cafeteria style where although you do get a menu at the table, you have to go up to the main counter and order. They have a wide range of other hot seafood items where you can even just make your own basket of delicious food. I opted for the BBQ Seafood platter which included: fish, scallops, mussel, chips, salad, and prawns. It was definitely very good as everything tasted so fresh! The meal also came with 3 sauces as they usually charge $ 1 if you want tartare sauce or tomato sauce.
