Wait wait wait, the Bee Gees grew up in suburban Brisbane? But… they’re big stars. And nobody gets out of suburban Brisbane. Well, these boys did, and they conquered the damn world. An alley between the shops right on the beachfront has been converted into Bee Gees Way, a memorial and museum to the Gibb Brothers, known and more obscure, and you know what? It’s damned interesting. Barry Gibb wrote most of the copy I gather, and he sure had a way with words, his prose is beautiful and poignant, especially the part about growing up in Redcliffe and all the stuff they used to do as kids, like diving for pennies that fell through the planks on the pier back when it had an arcade and such. There’s nightly light shows, and larger than life bronze statues that make great photo fodder. Who knew, eh? Who knew.
