Great mocha with realy chocolate flakes, and a fresh pumpkin pecan muffin with butter was a pleasant surprise. Very close to Rushcutters Bay.

I would give 5 stars if the service were quicker. But overall it’s amazing. Everything I ate was top shelf.

Food is very good. Healthy, taste, and just in the right amount. Good breakfast and lunch. The vibe is pretty cool too, not mention the waiters are good eye candies.

Great imaginative preparation, quality ingredients, and really friendly staff. Both owners work daily and they’re actively engaged with their clientele. Lots of vegetarian options and lots of sourced fish, meat. They also monitor the wine they serve. For ex, one owner recommended an unfamiliar wine to me, but when the glass arrived, the nose was off. I sat there thinking how to address it when the owner sent over another glass. He had tasted the bottle himself and declared it off, opened a new bottle, sent another glass, removing the old one, in a matter of minutes. They bake muffins every morning and the place is filled with regulars, very friendly regulars.

When you head to Rushcutters Bay, you are more than likely heading for the picturesque setting of the leafy park overlooking the pricey yachts on the harbour, as opposed to next to a main road overlooking a box hire shop and the local brothel, however on this occasion I, like many others it appears on this Saturday morning, have made an exception. Opened in mid-2010 by friends Daniel Bloom and Mark Glatter following the demise of previous tenant, Ash’s, Bay 88 may not seem like the obvious choice for a relaxed Saturday morning breakfast(the also serve lunch and dinner, but they can wait until the next review), what with its proximity to one of the busiest roads in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, but the passing traffic is quickly phased out as I and my eating partner(aka my girlfriend) peruse the unfussy menu. Glatter, a permanent fixture aside the coffee machine, whips us up a couple of textbook flat whites($ 3.50) with the compulsory milk-froth art that is synonymous with good coffees in this age of caffeine-snobbery. When it comes to the food, I decide on the Breaky Bruschetta with a poached egg($ 12), while the girlfriend decides on the Bacon & Egg Roll($ 8). We have a bit of a wait, which doesn’t come as a surprise considering the crowd that is gathered inside and out, but pretty soon our plates are delivered. A bacon and egg roll is a staple of Aussie breakfasts around the country, and this one has a distinctly Sydney feel to it, featuring rocket as well as a tangy tomato relish and a distinctly garlicky aioli. It seems to please the eating partner, so much so, that she’s unwilling to let me try a morsel. Must’ve been good. The bruschetta comes as a thick slice of sourdough topped with a generous layer of thickly diced tomato and avocado along with some healthy chunks of fetta and a few leaves of fresh basil. It all combines into an interesting flavour, which works well after taking a couple of seconds to work out! The poached egg with satisfyingly, runny yolk is a fine accompaniment and helps moisten the thick bread. Plates polished, we head off down to the picturesque park to look out, jealously, over the pricey yachts.
