After a disappointing Cottesloe fish and chip experience recently, I wasn’t expecting great things from a suburban outlet opening onto Albany Highway. I was wrong. The fish was flakey and moist, the batter crispy without leaving massive amounts of oil on your fingers. The chips were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, just like they should be. The pineapple fritters were little battered delights, with cinnamon sugar dusted into the bag for a little extra oomph! On top of this, they serve ribs. Again, sceptical. Ribs from a fish and chip shop? Didn’t seem likely to be all that good. Again, wrong. The serving size was huge, probably a rack and ¼ with chips and supposedly coleslaw(we didn’t get coleslaw. We did however get extra fish — almost twice as much as the 4 pieces we’d ordered, an extra pineapple ring, and a free bottle of coke given the size of the order — so I’m not too disappointed by the lack of coleslaw!) I’d say one serve of ribs would easily serve two people for dinner. They come in both BBQ and hot and spicy. Both sauces were very tasty, the hot and spicy has a little background heat but not too much. The staff are really friendly and the few eat-in tables/waiting chairs are very comfortable booths. The whole family were well and truly impressed by the food, and there was a bunch of leftovers due to the generous portion sizes. Given that it’s part-way between my house and my brothers’ place, this will definitely be a go-to takeaway option. They also do burgers, other fish and chip staples like dim sims and crab sticks etc. and random deep-fried things.

A group of 8 people went to Gourmand Fish & Chips to celebrate another birthday in August. The birthday boy, Hari, went on to order two of the family special, two ribs and a feast for two. When the order came, some guys proceeded to cut up the ribs and make sure that each person got to test the BBQ as well as the spicy pork ribs. The group consists of two girls and six guys where each girl only managed to finish 1 fish, 2 cuts of ribs, some chips & gravy and a dimsim /crabstick. Fish were well battered, crispy on the outside and less oily than what we usually found at other fish & chips shops. Ribs were surprisingly tender and tasty, we recommended the hot & spicy basting! We couldn’t find any soggy chips at all and it was so delish when we mixed it with hot gravy. Since we decided to dine inside the restaurant, we were given some styrofoam cups for our soft drink by the thoughtful owner. It was another good birthday feast and we were so fortunate that Gourmand has dine in seats that can be occupied by up to 20 people.

Been frequenting Gourmand for a couple of years now. Never been disappointed! If they do happen to make a mistake with your order, let them know and they’ll do their best to make it up to you.

The hot & spicy pork ribs at Gourmand in St James are OUTOFTHISWORLD! if you are a ribs lover and live in Perth metro area, you MUST try these ribs. The meat are so tender and cooked perfectly. This dish is so full of flavour, it’s ridiculously delicious. The fish & chips are amazing too. They can also cut the fish pieces into smaller pieces, good for little hands. Definitely recommended! PS: Don’t forget to order the pineapple fritters dusted with cinnamon powder. Delicious!
