Deceptive. Pastries never seem fresh when I go. The coffee is a crime. I’m told the cakes are okay. There are better options around. Seems to be popular with those that like ‘brands’.

I pass Laurent every day, and am met with the same question: what keeps this place full each morning when there are better options around? I don’t at all hate Laurent. I don’t wish it would close, or have any unreasonably sour feelings towards it. It just feels ‘meh.’ The ambience is cold, the bread loaves feel mostly like air and don’t keep well. I had a nice lemon tart there once, but on another occasion my quiche was heated in the microwave and my mother-in-law’s ham, cheese and tomato croissant was soggy and refrigerator-burned. The coffee is consistently watery — it has the aftertaste of French press that has been sitting on the counter overnight. I expected more from a place that has been there a long time and has a consistently busy interior. Personally, I would walk another 3 minutes around the corner to Tivoli Road, where I know I can get a great coffee, fresh flaky pastry and heavy artisan sourdough for the same cost.

Been coming to Laurent for years. Offering a lovely range of freshly prepared baguettes, quiches and tarts for lunch. Retails freshly baked bread, jams, donuts and beautifully handcrafted cakes(bite size and family size). Coffee is very average in my opinion, but but the looks of it, most people don’t mind it. Great meeting spot, close to the number 8 tram stop… great spot for a coffee break when you’re out shopping for shoes! This is my go-to local place to buy birthday cakes for family(saves me having to dirty my baking pans and wooden spoons). Staff are friendly! x

I try my best to avoid going here too often, because it is soo good. There are so many things to like about this bakery, including their delicious macaroons, chocolate tortes and eclairs. Everything is always beautifully fresh(and as an ex baker, I can tell when it’s not!). Laurent also do a range of gourmet breads. Their sourdough is lovely, with a very strong sour taste and crunchy crust. Laurent have a few locations around Melbourne, I personally prefer the South Yarra store, as I love the friendly staff and the location.

Since 1993, Laurent patisserie has been serving Australian made, French-inspired pastries, bread and cakes. When I first moved to Melbourne, Laurent was the first bakery I chanced upon on Toorak Road and it soon became my «must-have» once a week indulgence. Even though I do not go there as often these days, Laurent has since remained one of the patisseries in Melbourne that I know I can trust. Must tries include the Bordaloue tart, Tarte aux Fraises(strawberry tart), Pain au chocolat & almonds(chocolate and almond croissant) and the escargot(custard and raisin swirl). You’ll be happy to know that all breads and savoury pastries on offer are also made in their well-equipped kitchens and often it is the very aroma that beckons. In fact, that was how I chanced upon Laurent years ago… I followed my nose! And thankfully, it has never let me down.
