I was glad to see I’m not the only one who had a bad experience at this particular store. The staff were absolutely terrible whenever I’ve visited. I used to live around the corner and come in all the time to witness unprofessional juniors, and not just the juniors, but also a cranky old lately.(Manager?) I moved away years ago, but I was in the area visiting a friend and she wanted to get ice cream, and the only place open was baskins. I thought surely by now they have gotten their act together. But nope. Just as bad as ever. Don’t get me wrong, the taste of Baskins is great, and usually they are very clean and strict with regulations. But sometimes the quality can slip in franchise run businesses. The owner could try to cut costs, for example, by hiring incompetent/inexperienced staff, namely juniors, who only require a fraction of the wage of adults. But the quality of the entire experience really suffers. For example the junior could leave ice cream out for too long, or set the fridges to a wrong temp or whatever. I’m not sure what happened, but one day I had eaten no takeaway other than Baskin Robbins for the day, and fell very ill with what was diagnosed as food poisoning. The doctor could have been wrong, perhaps it was a viral infection instead. But the combination of falling ill, as well as rude counter staff has turned me off this particular store for life. Spend an extra 10 minutes to drive to the browns plains store. They are much more professional, polite and cleaner.

After a delicious dinner out one night, a friend and I were craving ice cream. We decided to venture quite out of our way to get some Baskins on the way home. As we pulled into the car park, with images of chocolate mousse royale and strawberry cheesecake occupying our thoughts, we noticed many of the cafes in the vicinity were closing for the night. It was almost five to nine, so we hurried over and were pleased to see their sign said they were open until 9pm; we had made it just in time. We were not pleased to see the girl inside walking towards the door, jingling keys ominously in her hands. We were only a couple of steps from the door when she reached it on the inside; she looked at us, we displayed our most winning smiles, then she reached up and flipped the sign over to expose the ‘closed’ side. To say we were taken aback would be an understatement; this girl had stared in our endearing faces and blatantly chosen to ignore us. I have to say that a small part of me understands; I worked my way through uni with crappy hospitality jobs and I know how awful it is after all the cleaning you’ve done, for a customer to arrive five minutes before closing time hoping to be served. But, I don’t think it’s very hard to scoop out a couple of balls of ice cream. There is no way we would have kept them past their closing time, and to happily turn customers away BEFORE closing time, I’m not sure that comes under the definition of good service. Obviously this is a one off occurrence(at least I hope so). I love Baskins; it’s some of the best ice cream around and there is no way I will be boycotting it(as if such a ridiculous idea occurred to you). I might even visit this particular store again, but I lost a part of my innocence that night.
