I really wanted this to be as good as it used to, so I went back again. We had the Carbonara which this time was sensational — seasoned, lots of ingredients. Tried the vongole again and it was much better. Still a bit gritty, which is not nice, but really tasty. I’m so glad this was a better experience because it’s a really nice little place. I don’t know if it’s a new chef or what, but much better this time! My previous review from Febuary: 2 stars Unfortunately something’s changed here, assume its the chef! Spaghetti al vongole — clams full of grit, no seasoning in the dish, very bland Gnocchi Gamberi — stodgy gnocchi. It used to be so light and fluffy — not anymore… Linguine Carbonara — the best of the dishes, but under seasoned. The service here as always is great, with the staff really friendly. That doesn’t make up for ordinary food though — and having had all of these dishes previously when they were great, this is disappointing.

This is a staple of St Kilda. Their square pizzas have been satisfying Melbournites for years, so upon my return I wanted to indulge once more. They have a huge array of toppings but I believe their best is the simple Pancetta, a tomato, garlic, parmesan, chilli and pancetta concoction.($ 5.9) I ordered two slices and the Insalata di rucola, a roquette salad with Parmesan and balsamic reduction.($ 8) This used to be my favourite combo but I am sorry to say it fell short of my treasured memory. The place itself has such a European/Melbourne modern feel to it that you can’t help but love, although I think the new owners have made some changes I am unable to stomach, pardon the pun. It is their use of parmesan that got me. Their was way too much and it seems they have changed brands from a subtle, high quality hard cheese to a pungent, grainy variety. This cheese was overpowering my salad and my pizza so overall I wasn’t that impressed. Perhaps I got a night when the cheese lover was a little too generous and being a true Melbournite myself, I shall give this beloved another chance in the future.
