Barratts is a gorgeous Adelaide Hills Winery. I must admit I oftenn forget what a phenomenal wealth of amazing wineries we have right on our doorstep here in Adelaide. I suppose McLaren Vale and the Barossa seem close enoough, but the Adelaide Hills features many cellar doors to rival these other nearby regions. Barratts is family run, so please be aware that they’re only open on Saturday and Sunday! They do indeed have two adorable pugs and each time I have been we have enjoyed regional platters while we did our tasting at the two large outdoor tables. The gardens are gorgeous too, so it’s a great good-weather destination!

I knew this winery would be good before we arrived because I had a bottle of Barratt Piccadilly Valley sauvignon blanc in my fridge at home. My partner and I were greeted at the door by Lindsay and Carolyn Barratt’s two friendly pug dogs yapping wildly with excitement, closely followed by viticulturist Lindsay Barratt, who patiently and quietly topped up our glasses when we were ready to sample the next wine. I ended up buying a bottle of the rich 2009 chardonnay, which tasted nice and fruity and which had been fermented by indigenous yeasts and matured in high quality French oak barriques for 10 months. FOOD The winery offers gourmet platters at weekends of cheeses and dips highlighting specialties of food producers of the region, which we unfortunately were just too late for. We’ll definitely make sure we’re more punctual next time. This winery has a nice, warm feel about it and Lindsay Barratt, whom we met, was lovely. OPENINGHOURS In addition to weekends, the winery is open on public holidays.
