The Academic and Life Skills (ALS) Institute was developed to fill a gap that currently exists in the tutoring industry today. Too often tutoring focuses on dot points in a subjects’ curriculum, with little thought given to students’ more immediate concerns– the assessments due next week! This rigid approach not only causes more stress for the student (in having to do excess work) but often results in decreased enthusiasm and even a reluctance to learn– the exact opposite of what it sets out to achieve!

At ALS institute, we take a holistic approach to tutoring. We believe that the most effective and enjoyable way to learn is through finding a balance between covering what’s in the curriculum, assisting students with upcoming assessment tasks and also providing tools, tips and support so that students can identify where to allocate their energy, how to stay healthy and reduce stress.

Established in 2011.

ALS Institute started off with founder Rebecca tutoring her brother through high school. Slowly but surely Rebecca was approached time and time again by family, friends and other students to help students who felt that they needed an edge over what was being taught in schools.

Rebecca completed her Higher School Certificate (HSC) in 2004 with an ATAR equivalent (then called a UAI) of 97.9, placing her well within the top 3% of students. She also achieved the NSW Premier’s all-​rounders status as a result of getting band 6 (a mark of 90% or more) for all six of her subjects.

Following this, Rebecca was offered a double degree scholarship at the University of Wollongong, a scholarship that is only offered to two students each year. She completed a psychology and commerce double degree with Distinction in 2010.

In 2011 Rebecca commenced work within the Commonwealth Bank of Australia graduate program. From the graduate program, Rebecca was offered a full time position within the Equities and Margin Lending division of the Bank. Now, as a Strategy and Operations analyst she works closely with the Risk, Operations, Finance, Strategy and Legal communities, with duties that include presenting to leadership teams, managing multiple stakeholder relationships across r
