Do you like cheese? Do you LOVE cheese?(are you the weird person who doesn’t like cheese but likes your friends who like cheese?) Then the GPO cheese and wine room is for YOU! There are a range of options to get your cheese fix including a cheese fondu for two($ 49), Mac and cheese(16 $) and cheese boards. The friendly and knowledgable staff will keenly pair a beautiful wine for you choice of cheese. The restaurant is intimate with low lighting and a sneaky corridor for a quiet date night or a lovely night with friends! I haven’t needed a reservation here but if you are planning to come it wouldn’t be worth missing out on. cheese cheese yes please!

Well that was a great surprise!!! Who would have thought a cheese fondue when it is 33 degrees can taste and feel so good ?! No matter the time or how hot it is, a cheese themed dinner at GPO will always be a good idea. The fondue is served on a platter with cured meet(chorizo, ham and bresaola), grilled prawns, potatoes and amazing figs. The cheese pot is not huge for 2 but that is also why you can actually enjoy that all year long… You are not walking out of it feeling over fed and heavy ! All ingredients were perfectly prepared and seasoned and marry each other perfectly with the melted cheese. And the grated truffle… oh my… it gives the fondu an undeniable refinement ;-) ! In terms of wine we went with the sommeliers recommendation, an Italian white that was absolutely perfect. They have an extensive list of bottles from all over the world and surprisingly not too expensive ! I will go back to try there selection of cheese or the mains as well !! The place perfectly serves its purpose !!!

Fromage or cheese. In any language is glorious. Add wine to the mix and you have a recipe for a perfect evening. We had a cheeky French waiter who was not only entertaining but could share vast knowledge of each of the cheeses and long wine list. We loved the idea of choosing cheeses from their extensive lists to create our own cheese board. Which we did. We chose a French blue vein cheese which had a beautifully balanced rich flavour, a Tasmanian red washed rind, and then a two soft cheeses one French cows milk and one goats milk. Each cheese board comes with crackers, bread, apple, grapes and pear to accompany the exquisite types of cheese. As well as cheese boards the GPO Wine & Bar boast a proper Dinner menu(entrée, mains & desserts), antipasto options and a luxurious Chocolate and Cheese Fondue menu. The manager of the restaurant came over to our table and introduced himself. It was nice to have a manger who checked in with his customers and made sure we were enjoying our dining experience. It’s this next level of service which truly made the difference. We loved the dim lighting and exposed stone walls. It’s a romantic atmosphere but still distinguished enough for a catch-up with a close friend or business dinner with a colleague. As a cheese lover I can see myself going back here again and again and never ordering the same thing twice.

Love the underground cellar vibe with the stone walls and intimate seating. The cheese and wines are excellent and there is such a huge range!!! Also loved the dessert fondue platter.

There’s nothing like having a waiter who knows when to chat and when to just silently and swiftly clear the table. And a French accent is just the icing on the cake. Our waiter at the GPO Cheese & Wine Room, let’s call him Rémi, that’s a super French name, right? Rémi was incredible, you could tell he loved his cheese and wine and he loved seeing other people explore this grand world of deliciousness. He gave us plenty of time to peruse the extensive cheese and wine lists before patiently answering our questions and helping us build a cheeseboard that matched the different tastes of my friend and me. Our ashed chevre from SA, oak smoked cheddar from Devon, an Italian Talleggio and a King Island Blue Brie were each full of character without stealing too much of the limelight from the others. We ended up with some great wines under the guidance of the ever accommodating Rémi, who just fed my indecision by giving me taste after taste of gorgeous shirazes, including a few off-menu ones that they just opened that morning. So who was I to let good wine go to waste! We also ordered an antipasto board to make us feel better about ourselves and the copious amounts of cheese and wine we were ingesting. Vegetables balance it all out, right? Absolution, flavour and generosity on a wooden chopping board. I only realised later that the hommous was missing from the board and was replaced by some cornichons, but hey, when you have service and food like this, I’m not going to complain about some tiny pickles.

This place serves the best Mac & Cheese in town. There are two types to choose from, a 4-cheese macaroni or 2-cheese with Italian Sausage minced in. They are made to order so expect them hot & fresh, and for less than $ 20 you get that with a glass of wine. Perfect place for catching up with friends & colleagues over lunch. Or like me, you could always opt to go alone, no talking, all eating. They also have a salad bar that does both dine in and take away. A little pricey for a take away CBD lunch at around $ 15.50 for a large pack but their salad selection of at least 20 different choices, is no doubt the best!

My 1st thought when I walked into the GPO Cheese & Wine Room was one of amazement, and surprise. My brain, and stomach instantly started screaming at me — «How on earth did I not know about this place?!». Tucked away in the depths of the GPO, and under Martin Place, this Gem of a find is all about quality. Quality of product, quality of service and supremely knowledgeable Sommeliers and Fromaggiers. We were there as part of a tasting, and were treated to some of the most fantastic cheese! 1st to go was the Bangalow Triple Cream ‘Tintenbar’ from Byron Bay, paired with Yarra Bank 2008 Cuvee VIntage, ‘Holy Goat’ with Ash from VIC, which we were told is actually the most expensive cheese in Australia, and it sure did taste like it was! This was paired with unique Piggs Peak«Sowvignon Blanc» from the Hunter. Next up was the Marrook Farm ‘Brinawa’ which was my 2nd fave cheese of the night, paired with my fave wine of the evening, a Wooing Tree Pinot Noir from Central Otago NZ. AMAZE-BALLS! Finally a Bruny Island ‘Tom’ from Tassie, with a Capercaillie 2008 ‘Ceilidh’ Shiraz from the Hunter AND McLaren Vale. The whole evening was both mouthwatering, and entertaining. I even managed to learn something while stuffing my face and sinking great wine. Who Knew?! HIGHLYRECOMMENDED.

It was Burns Day( ) and we were looking for an awesome place to get away from the grind, and to celebrate a great Scottish occasion. Until this point I knew a little about the GPO food court, but had no idea that a wine bar like this existed. Entering the cheese and wine room feels kind of like you are entering a secret bunker in some European wonderland. While naturally renowned for the wine and cheese, and for a morish modern Australian menu, for us on this day, they did a great selection of single malt whisky(which I may have a bit of a healthy obsession over…). Given the right occasion, I would love to go back and try out more of their menu, but I don’t think it’ll become a regular hangout joint. At least… not at this point.
