Wine Odyssey Wine Bar& Restaurant

We had a very disappointing experience here in late 2015, both with wine being out of stock and with horrid food.
The place seems to be closed now.

Great wine — but awful food. Service was very nice but you just can’t recover from that meal. We had four dishes and nothing was close to edible. The wine was great though…

Good little place with generous pours of some really great wine. Nice service people from around the world so have a nice international feel to it. Will definately seek out the next time I’m back in Sydney!

Very extensive list of Australian wines that are available in a small pour (through the Enomatic machine), glass, or bottle. The wine list is housed in a thick notebook– the back half of the book goes into extensive detail of each Australian wine appellation throughout the several states that produce wine. What started out as a stop for a glass descended into an afternoon of drinking around the country while never leaving the back patio.
We only ordered a light appetizer to eat but saw a number of dishes come out of the kitchen. All looked yummy but, as has been noted in other reviews, seemed just a tad small: I would not plan to come here for a dinner but instead to try several small plates along with several wines.
Wine Odyssey has an ambiance that makes one comfortable to stay and «sip» for a while– a cute parlor in the front, a patio in the back (covered the day we were there in August), and sidewalk seating out front. We got a kick out of the «Tessio Toilet» (watch The Godfather to get the reference) in the washroom. We had no issues with service and had the chance to talk with just about everyone on staff the afternoon we visited.
Prices were between $ 15-​$ 25 per glass (expensive for our American tastes but then, nothing is cheap in Sydney) but got healthy pours each time. I would certainly recommend a stop for true wine connoisseurs of any nationality who would like a wonderful immersion into the world of Australian wine.

Very fancy spot, though the portions were tiny (even for Americans I think). I think if we just came here for wine we would have enjoyed the experience more, as this was our first dinner in Sydney and we had to go elsewhere afterwards to feel like we had actually eaten dinner.

This place was really disappointing. Ordered their $ 23 big odyssey breakfast and my poached eggs were cold and and they forgot the bacon. I highlighted the missing bacon was served some a few minutes later that had clearly been microwaved. My coffee was frothy and tastless, and the $ 8 fresh oj was served half full. I live in Crows Nest so know good cafes, never coming here again.

This restaurant is in such a perfect spot. The wine selection was fantastic and affordable. I asked the waitress to recommend a drier, fuller-​bodied rose, and she advised us to try the Freeman Rondo Rose 2012. It was perfectly crisp and refreshing and under $ 50 for the bottle. I ordered the Fries with aioli to snack on while my husband ordered the Kangaroo Sliders. We also snacked on the Flatbread with garlic and olive oil and got a free serving of olives for checking in on Unilocal.The food was decent, though I would have preferred some sea salt on the fries (I did not taste any salt). The aioli was very nice. The flatbread was more like crunchy chips (aka crisps) than toasted bread, so it could have used more garlic and olive oil on it to offset the dryness of it. Either way it made a nice snack. My husband enjoyed the Kangaroo Sliders, and described it as tasting very much like cow, but I took a bite and beg to differ. The olives were really clean tasting… not super salty like olives can normally be. The service was fantastic, and the outdoor seating is great for people-​watching. If I end up back in Sydney in the future, I would definitely return!

We came to the Odyssey on our second night in Sydney. We headed down to the Rocks and wandered around trying to find a good place to eat and this seemed like a relatively affordable joint. We had a bit of a mixed experience here which is why I am only giving it three stars.
We had a lovely waitress who was very attentive and kept our wine filled up and took our orders quickly. We ordered salt and pepper squid for entrée and both got the rump steak for mains. The entrée wasn’t that tasty, it was quite bland and I didnt enjoy it that much, however the rump steak was soooooooo good. It was cooked to perfection and my partner commented that it was maybe the best steak he had ever had. It came with some good, tasty vegetables and some amaaaaazing mash potatoes. We both highly enjoyed that part of the meal.
The only problem was that we ordered a Woodhouse Sem Sav White which was bought to the table for us, she showed us the bottle and we saw the Woodhouse label and said that it was fine and proceeded to drink it. Only on inspection of the bill our $ 38 bottle was marked at $ 60. We quickly realised we had been given the riesling and not the sem sav. This may have been a mistake on not inspecting the bottle more closely, but when we saw the label and in mid-​conversation presumed it was the correct type of wine. We bought this up with the waitress and she said she’d speak to her manager. He came over and his whole attitude was very imtimitating and confrontational. He accused us of trying to get the bill cheaper and we should have noticed it was a different type of wine. If it was me there with a friend I would of probably caved as he came across very aggressive and was basically demanding we pay for this bottle. My partner was not happy and refused to pay for this bottle. The guy just stood there staring at him and finally walked away. However, instead of charging us the other bottle they would only take 10% off the bill. I understand that maybe we are slightly to blame but I have never had a waiter come off so rude and trying to bully people into paying something that was clearly a mistake on the waitress behalf.
Another thing was that when I checked in on Unilocal it said we could receive a free bowl of olives with any wine we ordered, however when we showed this to the employees, no one, not even the manager seemed to know what we were talking about or what Unilocal was so they refused to give us the olives. Not sure what went on there but it did make us feel a little stupid for asking.
All-​in-​all the food was good but the staff really need to learn to be more polite and not come across so intimidating when inquiring about a bill mistake.

A fantastic wine bar in the middle of the Rocks. With an extensive wine list, there is plenty of diversity to wet your whistle. I’ll admit I’m a bit rusty when it comes to wine knowledge, but the staff here are very helpful, and the front bar area has an interesting electronic pouring set up.
We came here as a group and shared one bottle until we ordered some food, and then another. The sharing plates are generous (some more than others) and are well flavoured to suit a variety of tastes and wines. There are suggested food/​wine pairings also which you can run with.
All the share plates came out at the same time which can work, in this case we probably would have preferred they be staggered but it was ok. Service was attentive at the start, but waned towards the end which required further effort to attract the attention of the staff. Relaxed interiors furnished with clean natural materials. Great place to take a break and share good conversation with friends.
Two bottles and 5 share plates between the five of us cost around $ 35 each — good value.

We went to Odyssey on our first night to Sydney for dinner. The wine tasting concept was stellar, haven’t seen anything like this in the states in terms of walking around the wine bar and paying for tastes, half glass or full glasses of different types of wine. Great concept.
My husband and I spent probably 20 minutes in the bar before deciding on a bottle and going to the table. From there, we started out with the cheese plate and then moved on to our mains, duck and gnocchi. The duck was fantastic but the gnocchi was a bit different. I probably could have just stuck with the cheese plate, which was fantastic, and the wine and have been good for the night.
Overall though, great location and great wine … Highly recommend if you are in the area or visiting Sydney.

Love the Enomatic, wish it were a bit less expensive. Fun stop if you just want to try some wines or if you want to enjoy a glass of wine with friends but can’t agree on a bottle. Good location, too!

We went to Wine Odyssey for a glass of wine and cheese plate after a show at the Opera House. It was a Monday night so they were in wind-​down mode when we arrived. Service was prompt, the wines and cheeses delicious. Two glasses of wine and cheese plate set us back $ 70.
Like a previous review once we were served the service dropped off. I would have loved for the waiter to drop by and see if we needed anything else like a water. I just came back from the USA and I appreciated the attentive service I received.
I wasn’t a fan of the décor but I enjoyed the cosy room with the comfortable chairs and couches.
Wine Odyssey is in a good spot and could promote itself as a place for a post show drink and light meals.

I stumbled onto this place when I was touring around The Rocks area of Sydney.
There was a sign in front of 6 tables along the side walk advertising a lunch tasting menu for $ 19. There were 3 «Journey» options (vegetarian, seafood, meat), with 3 items per Journey along with a recommended wine pairing. $ 19 seems like a bargain in Sydney plus with the lovely outside seating, I sat down.
I selected Journey #2 (seafood selections) with prawns, crispy soft-​shell crab, and barrumundi. I also opted for the wine paring, an Australian Chardonnay (not included in the $ 19).
The presentation was lovely with 3 square plates on a larger rectangular plate, so everything came out together. First up, were the prawns, there were 2 medium sized prawns with a remoulade sauce on a piece of bib lettuce. Second course was the soft shell crab. It was a ¼ portion of crab, so I got a couple of legs along with body.
Third was the barrumundi in a capsicum sauce with asparagus. The skin was nice and crispy and the fish underneath was perfectly cooked. I thought the portions and quality was excellent for the price.
My only complaint was the service was a bit inattentive after I was served. I finished my wine before my food and needed some water, which I didn’t get until after my food was finished. But the locals tell me that all Sydney service isn’t great, so maybe I actually got excellent service too!

Purchase a tasting card, read the tasting notes on each wine and experience one of the most sophisticated wine pouring systems I have ever seen. On this day we seek the staff’s advice and they are very knowledgable about the South African wines but the Australian wines mmm a bit questionable. Im no expert myself but I like to learn the history of the plonk I consume.
We take a seat outside and order a cheese platter then enjoy the half a glass of Mataro that we decided to get rather than spend the rest of our card on small nips of the diverse wines.
The concept is great in execution there could be improvement and also the selection but overall its a good experience to try at least once.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, «Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy». There is something that makes us happy when we think of wine. Maybe it’s the experiences I’ve had while enjoying wine that makes it a positive image in our brains. Sharing a bottle with friends, a perfect pairing of food and wine or just sipping on a glass at home with a good book, either way, they are all good memories. At the Wine Odyssey they have a number of ways to enjoy wine all in a non-​pretentious comfortable and friendly setting. They specialize in Australian wines and showcase some of the best winemakers in the country. The space is divided into multiple areas, the Restaurant, the Bar, the Wine Journey Room and the Shop. Each area is comfortable and the staff is warm and welcoming. They are well educated and extremely helpful. The bar has a private bar (a small room with comfortable furniture) for a more intimate setting and the Wine Journey Room you can self service yourself to a tasting, half or full glass of over 40 different Australian wines letting you sample the flavours at your own leisure. The Wine Odyssey is a great place to enjoy wine in a variety of ways without the stuffiness or intimidation of other wine bars.
