I’m such a fan of Free! It’s a great family run business which is perfect for me, a coeliac, due to everything being Gluten Free(and often dairy free, egg free, soy free, vegan etc.) They make a point to stock brands the supermarkets are always eradicating from their shelves so if you are particularly attached to an allergy specific product you can find it here. They also do coffee and a range of dine in food. I normally stop by when I am particularly craving a not so healthy pastry or sausage roll. It’s so hard to eat out when you’re combating coeliac disease so a 100% safe environment is just the best. I like the sausage roll as a treat and the Spanakopita is to die for. The pastry is gluten free of course but still yum and the filling is the best I have experience before or after diagnosis. The chocolate donuts are glorious, free of most allergens and vegan and as I write this I’m craving one. It’s hard to be a coeliac, that’s the reality. Cross contamination is a nightmare, food is expensive and the bread often tastes like cardboard. The staff of Free and their yummy treats/shop options make life a little easier. Logistics tip: Want to pay on card? $ 10 minimum purchase Highly recommend (also, I heard they’re getting in GF pannetonne before Christmas! Yum!)

Free. The Best Things in Life is a gluten free bakery /café /deli. As with all highly specialised products, the prices are not small but hey, if you’re forced to eat gluten free, or choose to do so for health reasons it’s nice to occasionally have equivalent products. Some of the products are regular supermarket brands, so definately stop by the store and check out which ones are safe! I’d take the chance to have a coffee and cake at the same time, because gluten free is delicious too!

Free* A Gluten and dairy free mini market and bakery. This is a HUGE deal for coeliacs, the gluten intolerant and the lactose intolerant. It is a safe space to eat without the lingering worry that the workers don’t actually know what gluten is, or don’t actually care. The family owned business is incredibly passionate about what they do and they are some of the loveliest people to speak to about specific dietery requirements. My sister has been diagnosed as a coeliac for about 4 years now and she can still struggle to find gluten free products she likes. I was so happy to take her here and re introduce her to jube lollies, pies and pasties, heaps of different bread varieties and even the hard to find gluten free asian condiment sauces. There was even a version of gluten free vegemite. We had a great chat with the owners who were supportive, knowledgable and would go out of their way to help you. We ended up leaving with three bags full of things, and will definitely be back, these places need supporting. (BTW gluten free cake is better then normal cake. yum.) *not monetary free.
