Salt On the Beach

We had the Pizza and salt and pepper squid which were both really good, the Asian dressed salad worked really well with the squid and was delicious
Wine was nice, cocktails were tasty but nothing outstanding compared to Perth standards
Atmosphere at sunset great though would recommend!

After we had been for our walk and swim we wandered past Salt on the Beach and decided to pop in for lunch. We ordered our food at the bar and took and outside table, at lunchtime on Christmas Eve and the place was empty save for an elderly couple. While we waited for our meals to come out we sat and enjoyed the view.
I ordered the fish and chips as well as a lychee cocktail. I really enjoyed the cocktail as it was very refreshing for the warmish summer weather we were having around Christmas in Perth. I really enjoyed the fish in the fish and chips and would dare to say it has been the best I can remember having! The flavour was not overly fishy but just right, the texture was firm in that the pieces did not fall apart the moment you touched them and the batter was delicious but not overly oily. The chips were nice, nothing to rave home about but they paled in comparison to the highlight that the battered fish was in this dish. The only disappointment I had with the meal was that I found a live creepy crawly in the salad when I was halfway through eating it. I chose not to notify the staff when they collected our plates as I had eaten enough of the dish by that point to be satisfactorily full.
Overall it was a nice to walk right off the beach and enjoy a meal while we dried off. The staff were attentive when we needed assistance, otherwise they remained at the bar as the outside area seemed self-​service for water and cutlery. I would happily return for another meal and a few drinks, I will however be a little more attentive to any side salads that accompany my dishes to make sure they have been washed properly.

I have a soft spot for this place as its where I got married five years ago! It’s a mix of a restaurant and a casual beach bar situated on an amazing stretch of coastline, Port Beach. The views from Salt are incredible and it’s the perfect spot to watch the sun go down while enjoying a cold drink. There’s a playground for the kiddies and they hold many event throughout the year for the adults. I’ve eaten in both the restaurant and beach bar and have always left satisfied. A walk along the beach is a must before you leave!

I didn’t know what to expect with the food… but what I did want from the restaurant was the view — which did not disappoint me. My husband and I made reservations at this restaurant for our wedding anniversary but we were an hour late… however, they were very accommodating and took us in. They gave us a table with the view of the sunset, so I was really happy. As for the food, we ordered a platter of different seafoods which was OK compared to what we’ve eaten in the past… the dessert was okay also. The waiters were really nice, the view was great… which is why I’m giving them four stars: D — It’s hard to get quality service. and they did a really nice job and made our visit to the restaurant enjoyable.

I’ve been to Salt on the Beach twice now, both times in the restaurant side and have enjoyed it both times. I do like that there are two different experiences on offer — a proper restaurant that plates up good quality, well presented and well balanced food, and a beach bar, that I would definitely like to try out after an afternoon at the beach.
I think I had a lamb or beef roast of some sort on my first visit, and I do remember being uncomfortably warm as it was summer, and the glass windows, while affording a great view, make for a greenhouse-​type atmosphere inside which is made slightly more unpleasant while eating a hot meal. On my most recent visit I ordered the beef fillet, which came with beautifully salted green beans and a pumpkin and potato rosti that had an interesting texture and a beautiful, intense flavour. I really enjoyed it, and I felt that the price fairly accurately reflected the quality and flavour of the meal.
The view from the restaurant isn’t the best view I’ve had during dinner, but it would come pretty close! The ocean is somewhat obstructed by beach dunes and shrubbery but the water is clearly visible, and they have made every effort to maximise the view by installing glass louvers in lieu of walls. This is great for summer — not so practical for winter, as the waitress mentioned to us it does let some water through when it rains.
The staff and service was a bit of a mixed bag. The restaurant is VERY quiet during the day (from memory on our first visit we were the only ones there, and on our recent visit there was one other table of two), and it took quite some time to get the attention of someone to seat us. Our waitress was quite friendly but also a little clumsy and unprofessional, and couldn’t remember the specials — and I feel that the few extra dollars you pay for the meal should be reflected in the level of customer service.
I did enjoy both the food and the view — I wouldn’t say Salt on the Beach is my favourite place, but it does serve good quality food and provides a nice setting for a date.

Food was ok. Service was friendly and prompt. Altogether a good experience and happy to return.

This place is generally pretty quiet during the day — the times I’ve been. It’s great that they have a playground there for the kids — however if it’s a really hot day it turns into a not so fun bum scorcher!
The tasting plate I had there recently was amazing and you can’t beat the location and afternoon sunset views.

I read on a Unilocal forum that Salt on the Beach has amazing views and is romantic. I was planning an anniversary dinner and so I scheduled (with reservations) a dinner here. I initially wanted the beach bar side for the more relaxed menu (like wood-​fired pizza) and less-​perceived pompousness. They cancelled my beach side reservations as they don’t take them but said they would try to keep a couch available for us.
When we arrived to the beach bar, I realized this is not what we were wanting. It was loud, kids were running around (with faces painted like zombies and vampires… it was not Halloween) and it was incredibly hot with the sun beaming in (6 p.m.). We walked back to the restaurant side and asked if they happened to have a spot on the patio. Fortunately, they did.
Now, I will go ahead and say that everything here is ridiculously overpriced. But, truth be told, when do I not say that? What I can say is service was nice, restrooms were functional and clean, and the food was actually delicious (we ordered the specials of the evening). The one regret would have been to not order dessert. The little filled ceramic bowl was not worth $ 15 and I’d argue that rhubarb has a better texture if pureed.
I don’t know that we’d be back to the fine-​dining side based on cost but splurging (with a coupon nonetheless) for the view was worth it.

This is a great beach-​side restaurant and bar. The bar is very laid back with a nice little playground for the kids, and during the summer they have free face painting on certain nights (call for details), making it a real treat for the little ones.
The menu is pretty limited and the prices are high for what you get in terms of food and drink. Really you’re paying for the right to sit just over the dunes and watch the sun set on the water with a cold drink and a hot meal while your kids are free to run around causing havoc.
The fine dining restaurant is a beautiful option for a special meal. The food is delicious, well cooked and well presented. The staff are friendly and attentive and, of corse, there is the beautiful view of the water.
There is ample parking in a huge, free lot.

Don’t be turned off by the shabby shack theme that seems to be going on outside this place is actually fantastically located, with great views. I popped in for a lunch snack just after 11am, i was greeted by a girl that was possible a little disorganized (although they had just opened) and was happy to find that they were open for bar meals.
I ordered a $ 26 steak sandwich with side of beer fries. With a post mix coke as they don’t sell bottles :(The food came out very quickly and was well presented. And it tasted just as good as it looked! I’ll definitely be back when I’m in the area!

Feels likes mid level pub beer garden but charges $ 35 for a totally unremarkable fish and chips and one beer.

Called in here for the Sunday Session — what a disappointment.
With a ridiculous bar service requirement of provide a table number and we will deliver drinks, the poor couple before me stood in line and waited to be served, only to have to find a table and return to the back of the que for service.
My drink order effort also bordered on the most ludicrous thing ever gone through. Ordering two drinks for the appropriate table where our group was loitering next to, guess what — they never arrived. Upon returning to the bar, I was repeatedly told by glamours blonde bar girl that I need a table number — clear signs she was not listening to the complaint of no drinks.
The view is great being on the beach, and the food is not bad. Be careful of the smells — a sheep ship or a tanker at port, the wrong breeze and not the best place to be enjoying a cold lager on a Sunday.

Great location and the place caters well for children and families. The popcorn shrimp and their easy drinking brew on a summers afternoon is the shot.

North Freo has some beautiful beaches so thank goodness they also have visionary establishments to utilise the resources available. Salt on the beach is a multi faceted bar/​restaurant and functions venue that combines all that is at hand to produce a uniquely Fremantle experience.
Not originally being very familiar with Fremantle I am grateful to the friends I have who happily share their inside information with me. I arrived in shorts and a singlet under the impression, from friends, that this was very much a relaxed beach bar– I walked in the main entrance to find a classy dining room that overlooked the ocean. The staff at reception were warm and welcoming and asked if they could assist me– clearly looking like a fish out of water. I explained that I was looking for friends who said they would be at the beach bar. The manager happily escorted me out the back and upon me locating my friends; he jokingly teased them for not having more cocktails on the table to make it easier to be located!
Salt on the beach is what every beach bar should aspire to be– under the shade of a circus like marquee, with an open aired panoramic view of the beach it is perfectly designed to wander from the wooden tables and stools down some stone steps onto the beach, into the ocean and back. The bar runs smoothly, you place your order pay and the beverages are delivered shortly afterwards. (Heads up– make sure you take note of your table number)
There is a water station and a playground up the back, with readily available and clean bathrooms– which makes this a very family friendly place. Although I wasn’t prepared with appropriate «quick drying’ swimwear, I couldn’t not take advantage of the opportunity so I paddled in my denim short shorts and bra attempting to pass off a «Victoria Secret swimwear collection” — upon returning to my beverage I was able to leave my shorts on the rock wall to dry as I soaked up the chilled vibes of the live music– acoustic guitars and the beach are soul mates.
This is a funky, genuine, cruisy, down to earth bar– why compromise when you have salt on the beach?

Location location location, this is what keeps Salt in business. There have been a number of bad reviews coming out of here about the food but I suppose it all depends on what you expect and what you are anticipating.
It gives the air of a 4 star restaurant so many people opt for the expensive dining options.
If you stick to the beachside bar however and grab a wood-​fired pizza you will not be so disappointed. With a craft brew in one hand and a slice of fresh pizza in the other as the sun shines on your face, you can’t really go wrong.
