Saturday mornings in our household tend to go a little something like: «Can we stop at [x] on our way to [y]? I want to check this new place out.» He rolls his eyes and begrudgingly agrees. This morning was no different when I asked for a slight detour to Balaclava Street to pop in and visit the yet un-signed Cup Roastery. His protests continued as we ordered our coffees. «Why can’t we get breakfast here?» «Because they don’t serve food.» «Well what kind of place just serves coffee?» «This one. It’s a good thing happening in Brisbane.» His freshly made flat white passed into his hands, he sips and silence. «Okay. I might be changing my mind. This is good.» You see, I’ve known about just how good Cup is for a while, and now with their own roastery I see it soaring to new heights. My new-to-coffee beau, however, is still coming to appreciate just why a place like this, that does only serve pastries and has a focus on the coffee rather than a café menu is such good news for Brisbane. The space itself is minimal and sparse yet oddly full of character. It reminds me of Sight Glass Coffee in San Francisco. The slayer coffee machines become a focal point and you can sit and watch Josh(Cup’s owner) pottering out the back tending to the roasting side of things. Whether staying for a sit-down coffee or a takeaway this spot is worth the visit. I can’t wait to see what it’ll be like for a cupping course or just a busy weekday with conversations buzzing, caffeine flowing and idea bubbling away.
