The spicy noodles(my favorite item on the menu) had me coming back to this place for years. Due to inflation their prices have increased and they replaced the bokchoy with bean sprouts, but it’s still worth the price($ 6.50). Not the healthiest but overall good quality and large portions.

Come here for the Sichuan-style Spicy Wontons($ 6.75 for 12) with green onions, roasted peanuts, and tasty mala(i.e. hot from chili peppers, numbing from sichuan peppers) chili oil. Certainly not the best spicy wontons ever, but damn good for the price and convenience.

If you want spicy wontons, you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else, and especially at these ridiculous prices. $ 6.75 for some good action and nice enough to pick your level. Definitely not the thickest, but the texture, dipped deep in the famous Chinese oil, add in the onions, and lots of roasted peanuts: easy repeat for me. Cash only.

Another gem in the Crystal Mall food court! They’re famous for their spicy wontons, but they make hand pulled noodles! I ordered the cold sesame noodles and spicy wontons: mild haha! The noodles were awesome: they were perfectly al dente, had a great bounce to them, and had bite! As for their spicy wontons, while the skin was good, not too doughy or thick, and was dosed with a generous amount of spices/chilli, I’ve definitely had better. Still good for a food court though!

If you want the softest beef that has a tiny bit of tendon melts in your mouth, then this is the place to check out. My new found fav in Crystal mall. The girl at the counter of Chao sau wang said it’s Szechuan style food. The Taiwanese noodle next door can’t compare softness. As well Ali shan is less soft but it has decent service and nice décor.

Unilocal is too sparse in Canada and the reviews are not even helpful for a gem like this place(especially with the review numbers being so low for almost every spot in this mall) Had heard many things about this place being the spot for beef noodle soup and was really skeptical of it being in the Crystal Mall food court. Combine that with the fact that they are often closed(business must be good) and I had tempered expectations. After some great pan fried soup dumplings and killer Chinese BBQ, I went for the trifecta and ordered beef brisket and tendon noodle soup. Honestly, the smallish bowl doesn’t look like much but many, many patrons during the lunch hour order it. The broth was fantastic. Very flavorful and piping hot. The vegetables were fine, but the tender brisket and tendon pushed it to the top. The noodles were solid and the bowl was gone before I knew it. Chef Hung in Richmond is definitely the nicer and more famous spot for beef noodle soup but this place is legit. It’s quite good and much cheaper. Win. Cash Only.

After discovering China(Crystal Mall) across the street from Metropolis Metrotown, I gleefully circled like a ravenous shark until sinking my teeth into Chao Sho Wang, an excellent source of spicy won ton soup(or dry if you prefer). The pork won tons were very fresh and seasoned perfectly! My wife and I shared a bowl(12 won tons) and are dying to return for a second feast. A shaved ice joint directly adjacent to Chao Sho Wang will conveniently cool your tongues for dessert.

The food court at Crystal Mall is quite the war zone. This establishment is located towards the rear, away from the main corridor part of the food court. Parking is available, if you don’t mind the horrible layout of the round parking lot. Having no idea what to order, I went for the #7 House Special noodle. Was it good? Oh yes. I’m a sucker for chili oil, and they douse these noodles in a nice fine film of it. There are other vegetables mixed in, but the noodles are firm and delicious. This place really is a gem.

Had a taste of bf’s Red Oil Wonton(#15 on their menu — $ 6ish). Wontons were standard, but is quite good nonetheless. But man oh man is that red oil sauce salty(and possibly laden with MSG?). I only had 1 piece and didn’t want to eat any more. Bf was crazy thirsty afterwards and downed at least a half litre in one go. A regrettable food choice for him.

A lamb skewer, half of a lamb sandwich, and half a bowl of Taiwanese squid stew later, I was ready for more food. As I walked from one food court stall to another I stumbled across Chao Shou Wang. I saw a plate of plumped spicy wontons waiting to be picked up. I couldn’t help but stare. I did a quick visual inspection of the wontons. The wonton skin looked thin(good sign), chili sauce/oil looked fresh and spicy(another good sign), and chopped green onions looked fresh(more good sign). After a quick chit-chat with a store clerk, I ordered myself a bowl of spicy wontons(medium spiced), suggested by the lady whose hands worked furiously on wrapping fresh wontons. My 12 wontons came in a bowl of spicy broth. The contrasting colors of the devil red broth, freshly chopped green onions, and floating white wontons made me gasp. I had a spoonful of the broth and I couldn’t stop wanting more. Whatever secret recipe was in the broth was aromatic and sent tingling sensations all over my mouth. I tried the wontons but they were only meh. The skin, though thin, was a bit on the soggy side. The meat filling was ordinary. I did polish off most of my order. I personally wouldn’t order the spicy wontons in broth again as I find the wontons to be only mediocre. However, I would definitely buy the broth as take out(if available) and mix with my own wontons.

Coming for a snack/lunch solution, always leads me back to Crystal Mall, this time with my partner, and it was her idea to try a dish from this little place. The prices on their small menu are very fair(affordable) and like all the food vendors in this food court, they know what they are doing in terms of wontons. My partner ordered their«spicy wontons» and was definitely surprised with the outcome of this meal. They give you 12 of these dumplings, packed with the spicy sauce that makes this dish spicy and tasty. I love eating spicy food, yet I do tend to sweat, and the beads were dripping from my head to the back of my neck taking a bite from her dish. The one thing we both noticed when picking up the order and bringing it to the table was the dough wrapping they used, as you it has this transparent effect. These are not small dumplings, but the meat they used was tasty, each and every bite. A definite try in this food court when you are just feeling for something without rice, or noodles!
