I played golf on the weekend(Riverway Golf Course), and after finishing we went to Curry King Café for a quick lunch. I’ve been here a ton of times, and I’ve usually enjoyed the food here, but it has been a long time since I last came to Curry King. I have to say I did not enjoy my last experience at Curry King. I guess I haven’t noticed it but the café looks really dated now. They have spend 0 money on renovating this place. I had the unfortunate experience of going to the washroom… Yikes its pretty dirty in there! Lucky I didn’t have to do a number 2! The other think I noticed is the prices have gone up on this place! They use to have reasonable set lunches and dinners. Not so now. It was about 230 pm so I wasn’t too hungry. I ended up ordering a beef egg on rice dish. It was not too enjoyable. The rice was a bit hard and old tasting. I will not be coming back to Curry King Café. The owner needs to make some renovations to this old established business! Its just that time!

We were on Kingsway and Patterson location, we had to get a quick lunch before our next appointment. There is not any choice of HK Style café except Curry King. I only been there once and didn’t recall the food anymore. Sure… another try again. The place is clean and the waitresses are efficiency and friendly. The menu selection are great and portion of good is reasonable. We ordered beef brisket in red curry with rice and beef with garlic fried rice in stone pot. The beef brisket was a bit fatty but the red curry was great. The fried rice was ok. Based on my observation, I believed they do have a lot of dinners riveted.

The food here is actually not bad. There’s free wifi and you can do take out. As far as Chinese restaurants go, this one definitely isn’t cheap. It’s a typical interior of a chinese HK style café(so not super clean and smells a bit like grease and food) and the service is what you’d expect.

Good food, bad servers. The food is usually good and I come here sometimes. But I wonder why is the server’s attitude consistently bad. I mean, if you managed to get your customers to have a bad mood even before the dish is made, what good can come from it. Come on now, don’t fuel the stereotype of «Cantonese restaurants always have bad service»!

First time here from Toronto, very delicious restaurant. Trying Vancouver Crab and lobster, decent desert.

We ordered the mini spaghetti bolognese and red curry with beef brisket. Service is pretty good for HK café. My tea is always refilled. However, the mini dishes are pricier than the average HK cafes. We got yin yeung drinks(half tea half coffee) and it tastes like other places. I would rank this place OK. Nothing special and not that cheap.

This is a place I like to try to stop at when out in the Metrotown area. I have dreams about the roast duck red curry. I also really love some of the stone pot dishes. The kids usually order a rice omelette and split it because the dishes are huge. The waitresses are friendly(which isn’t a given at HK cafes) and they will bring plastic plates and cutlery for small children if you ask.

One would assume that, eponymous to its name, the curry at Curry King would be really good. When I finally had a chance to try it, well… let’s just say it’s nothing to brag about let alone name a restaurant after. Eating at this establishment is a really hit-or-miss ordeal. On good days, you’ll be treated to incredibly well-plated and perfectly fried french toast. On others though, you’ll be subjected to red-bean-ice that tastes like it was watered down… and then watered down AGAIN. I feel really torn having to score this place because it’s just one of those places you’re okay with, regardless of food quality, because they let you sit for as long as you want. Service is always genial and attentive. Given my ambivalence, I’m gonna have to give this place a middling score. 2.5 Stars. **1/2

Curry King is a casual Hong Kong Style Café located on Kingsway that serves up a plethora of dishes, ranging from curries, to stone rice bowls, spaghetti, fried rice, congee and steak! Pork Belly Stone Rice Bowl It was surprisingly good! It tasted homemade, like something your grandma would make for you. You have to mix the rice together with the sauce before eating it. It wasn’t overly salty, and the flavours were rather simple. The chinese radish gave the dish a slight sour undertone. The pork belly was succulent, moist and flavourful. The lean to fatty meat ratio was even. The rice on the bottom gets crispy and fragrant, which is the best part about stone bowls!

On my last visit there I had M74 «Grilled Chicken Steak with Spicy Coconut Sauce with Rice». Amazing! Super spicy and super tasty. The crispy, salty, peppery chicken was awesome as usual. Giving 4 stars because I didn’t really like the vegetable side that came with the chicken. It was frozen mixed vegetables out of a bag. I would have preferred anything over this, like maybe some fresh steamed broccoli or some other Asian green.

If curry is your thing, this is a decent alternative to Mui Garden. Straight up comfort food. Parking is available on the side streets. The inside is typical as of many HK-style cafes, with stacks of dishes lying around, and booths along the sides. Staff were quick and efficient. No complaints there. I had a pork stone bowl. It honestly tastes like something your mother would make for you, other than the stone bowl part. A slab of pork with a large piece of broccoli, on plain rice. No subtleties in the flavouring, but it’s just like quick easy home cooking. Served with a bowl of vegetable soup, that tastes like it came straight out of some Chinese guy’s house. No frills, but nothing special.

I’m a huge fan of clean, well maintained, HK style cafes. The newer looking ones around Burnaby and Richmond are some my favourite places to eat. Hood Asian joints, with grimy carpets, nasty washrooms, and duct tape everywhere? No thanks.(I have a test with restaurants where if I wouldn’t take a cute girl there, then I don’t take myself there. I don’t care how good the food is, you can take the time to sweep the floor). Luckily, Curry King is very clean and comfy. When you walk-in, you don’t get smacked in the face with the strong smell of curry either, which is a huge plus if you’re here with non-curry lovers. Their menu is huge so I wasn’t expecting much, but the curry I had lived up to the restaurant’s name, and best of all it wasn’t too heavy. I thought the food was above-average, I ordered the beef belly with red curry and rice. It was delicious, everything I expected and nothing more. Food came out super quick too, all within 10 minutes. My HK style lemon ice tea was solid but a bit warm, not enough ice in it but it happens. I thought it was well decorated too, not super Asian trendy like some spots in Richmond, but still nice. You could sit here without being blinded by bright colours and loud canto-pop. Perfect balance. I’d definitely go back again. (I went to the Curry King on Kingsway located next to the large sidewalk, not the Curry King at Crystal. I’m guessing from the reviews I’m reading, there are reviews for both here.)

Nothing really special, other than it’s convenient and not much HK style cafes in this area. It’s either go the The Boss inside crazy Metrotown or drive back to Vancouver Joyce-area for Honolulu café and a few others. Curry isn’t Mui-garden quality but neither are the prices. do recommend their honey garlic spare ribs, it’s worth ordering again actually. good service though, was willing to accommodate combining a 2-seater table along the booth seating along the walls. Men’s washroom is a bit hilarious, with the mop & other cleaning supplies too lol.

I love the full Curry King restaurant. So when I saw this at the Crystal Mall food court, I was like, why not? While this place is delicious, it’s not stellar. It’s not any better than the restaurant which is literally a 5 – 10 minute walk away, and portion wise I think it’s a bit smaller. True to their name, the curry here is just as good as their restaurant one — and the selection of food is extensive. A solid reliable selection in this food court of choice, so it’s a 3-star for sure. Wouldn’t be much more than that I don’t think. Yes: Cheaper than their restaurant prices. Their curry is an obvious win. No: Their basic noodle stirfry was mediocre. Was definitely not impresed with that.

You put KING in your name, you better be exceptional at something. Then again, i guess Not-too-shabby Curry doesn’t have the same appeal. It’s all pretty good here, good prices and good service, free Wi Fi too! I think it’s a decent place to have lunch during the week day with a coworder or 3. Anyway I would still ask to have the CROWN relinquished.

Curry fish balls anybody? This is the one stall in the foodcourt at Crystal Mall that I always think of, when I’m not even thinking of the curry fish ball goodness that I do not need, but when I walk by to take a look, it’s there just to tease me to say«come on, order it». In regards to curry based chinese food, if your thinking about getting a bowl of curry beef brisket, or the occasional dish of Singapore fried vermicelli, they offer the most variety as per the name. And you get to see what is lying in the bins of already prepared grub.

Solid no-frills HK-style café with good late afternoon specials. Came here on a rainy Monday afternoon and it was surprisingly quiet for a HK café. The décor is a bit obnoxious with a kaleidoscope-like table covers which look more at home in a tacky casino. But then again, unlike a few HK cafes in town, it sticks to its roots: non-pretentious eatery with a wide affordable selection. Usually, my litmus test for a good HK café is baked pork chop with tomato sauce on rice with a HK tea/coffee. But I had to try the curry/tomato sauce baked pork chop on rice which is served with ½ curry and ½ tomato sauce for the best of both worlds. Also, they also spread peas and carrots with the baked cheese and sauce — which I loved. Comes with a drink for about $ 6-$ 7. Unfortunately, like many other HK cafes — they charge an extra $ 1 if you want the drink cold(one of my pet peeves: $ 1 extra for ice?!?). I consider myself a HK café gourmand and there are better HK cafes in Richmond(quite a drive for me as I live in East Van) — however, probably one of the better HK cafes in Burnaby/East Van area. Will be back to try their curry beef brisket.
