Disappointed. Our go-to sushi place Sushimoto was closed so decided to try this one. Yaki Soba was yucky soba. Gyoza were dry fried. Food was mediocre and service was terrible. Never topped up tea or asked if we needed anything. Host didn’t even say a word when I paid at the till. Just don’t.

Small restaurant, so it fills up quick. For me the most important thing when it comes to sushi is freshness. The fish has always been fresh regardless of what time of day I have gone. The pricing is standard for similar restaurants. Fairly certain there is a signed picture of Michael Buble and Ben Stiller by the cash register. What better endorsement then those of Hollywood celebrities!

The food here is mediocre and the service is brutal… They’re really rude, speak in their own language about you(you can tell) and really have no thanks for your patronage… They really need to fix their attitude to how they treat the person who provides their existence, dummy right up!

Definitely passable sushi and a close drive from the SFU Burnaby campus. I find that the quality really varies, though. They don’t cut the fish in the correct way(note the tuna roll) which is indicative of their thing: Gaya churns out a lot of volume — hence the variation in quality. However, if you are hungry and on Lougheed, it’s a good place to keep in mind. The staff running the place are really friendly and you can see that your business is really appreciated in how they treat you.

This place is so close to my house so I figured why not. I’m writing this review because I’ve read reviews that’s on two end of the spectrum. So food is below average. I’ll compare this with other Korean owned sushi joint. If I rate sushi Giwa a 3/5, this place would be a 1.5−2÷5. The rice is not sushi rice. Tuna, salmon, hamachi, is not very fishy but definitely not fresh nor tasty. I’ve sat here for an hour and my cup had been dry for 45 minutes. The two servers are just chatting there in Korean laughing about something most of the time. I don’t usually write reviews but we’re done with our food for 15 minutes now and they didn’t even walk over to check. There are a total of two tables eating. Anyway, even though I live 5 minutes away, I probably won’t come back. Edit: funny side note as the server just scoffed and rolled his eyes when I asked him to pack my food a second time. I will never come back.

Gaya Sushi is one of my favourite sushi places. The food is consistently yummy and I’ve tried quite a few items off the menu. The service could be better – sometimes the servers seem to busy because the restaurant can get quite full, but I find most sushi places provide similar service when they’re busy. Will definitely be going back!

Cani give less than one star ? I order take out for my kid on days that he has soccer right after school. Nothing fancy, but always avocado role is in the list. I am tired of loosing appetite and wasting money … So many times the avocados are rotten. I don’t know how the store it. After a few times I called once, just to ask them to watch for this and instead of being apologetic, they asked me to bring it back if I don’t like it !!!

Great food, terrible service. I’m a loyal customer here and I love the food but the servers won’t bring me tea or water and I have to ask for miso soup several times. I wish they would give me better service because sadly I don’t think I’ll be coming again.

Only because I can’t give zero. Terrible service. Been a regular for a while until now. The food has been off several times the last few visits. And when I tell them they tell me that’s how it was supposed to taste. Also saw the food delivery guy drop something out of a tub and scoop it back in and brought it inside. I hope it wasn’t consumed!

$ 48 for 5 people take out? Oh yea. We tried assorted tempura(huge), dynamite rolls, yam tempura roll, teriyaki chicken roll(yea), unagi roll, assorted veggie combo, and like a few more. DERICIOUS come here. I think Michael Buble’s autograph lives here too-because you know, he lived in Burnaby at one point and once stepped foot in here. Allegedly, Global’s Squire Barnes was also spotted dining here. Freshly made rolls, been here a few times in my lifetime now. Give it a chance~ Really easy to get to. Happy tummies result after eating here for sushi cravings: D

The food here is fairly good, their avocado salad is huge for $ 3.95 but I tries the ramen… Don’t bother it’s horrible. The noodles are like from a mr noodle cup. Broth is terrible too

Not too much to say about Gaya except that it’s a fairly good and reliable sushi spot in Burnaby. We haven’t had any negative experiences. I come here mostly for eat-in, although I would also recommend take out as the space isn’t huge and we’ve had to wait for a table during dinner hours. The Bainbridge roll is a favorite. The last time we ordered the agedashi tofu, I thought they could have cut the tofu pieces in half, they were long and rectangle shaped. The sauce and dashi broth were good though. Food and service have been consistent throughout our visits.

Thank the Unilocalers for leading us to this place in the middle of nowhere Burnaby. What a tasty gem so far away from any big commercial areas! My moms and I went here on a Thursday evening and were lucky to get the last table for 2 before a crowd showed up — probably 5 or 6 groups waiting in line. The food is surprisingly inexpensive but clearly very high quality. Well prepared maki and nigiri, and slightly unique flavours for the traditional appetizers. The standout maki was the firecracker roll — scallop and smoked salmon with spicy tuna on top. Dang son! And for only five dollars?! Pickled mackerel nigiri was a first for me. A nice palette cleanser. The service is the only critiquable issue in this place. Quite slow once you’ve been served. But I will go back for sure!

The food was ok and on time. Nice art. But the server was horrible. She never filled up our tea, didn’t take away our used plates, and took forever to catch her eye when we wanted second order. The other server disregarded us too. Didn’t need to leave any tip

The best Chirashi don in town. Fresh fish, good portions and decently priced. Personal fav is the firecracker roll with scallop, spicy tuna and spicy salmon with a perfect char smoked flavour :) Sushi here is always fresh and I’ve never had a bad experience.

I went here today with my parents for the first time. I’ve heard and read good things about this place, so instead of going to Sushi Garden, I decided to ‘drag’ them here. We ordered 3pc of fresh oyster, prawn mayo, seafood salad, salmon and tuna nigiri sushi, sashimi, assorted tempura, negitoro, firecracker roll, bainbridge roll, and 3 bottles of beer(asahi black). Wow, I liked everything that arrived at the table except the seafood salad, but only because I’ve never been a fan of it in the first place. The rolls were really yummy. I know people love the firecracker roll, but I think I liked bainbridge roll a lot more. Nigiri and sashimi pieces were fresh and delicious. Tempura were deep-fried quite well. I noticed they used a new batch of oil for deepfrying, so the tempura had that extra refined ‘clean’ taste: D yum! The staff were quite nice too! We got what we wanted without a long wait. I would definitely go here again.

Cheap– yes Friendly staff– yes Tasty food– yes Good portions– yes Will I go back? Hell yes! Items I’ve tried: fire cracker roll yaki udon house roll chopped scallop nigiri Inari nigiri Ebi mayo Ebi sunamono Dragon roll … And I’ve liked them all! I’ve been here about 5 times and do not hesitate to go back. I actually crave the fire cracker roll. They have special rolls and they are only $ 5 – 7 dollars. If you call ahead to pick up, they generally get it ready within 10 mins. Have you noticed yet? I love this place.

It seems like everyone is still raving about the food, but the service is definitely sliding down the scale. I really wanted to try this place, something different from the usual Sushi California, and it was so close to home! Plus they had some interesting rolls on the menu. We ordered the bainbridge roll, firecracker roll, chicken karage, sushi pizza, and ebi mayo. For those who don’t know, «sushi pizza»($ 8) is essentially a flat round of deep fried rice, layered with all the«house» items: crab meat, avocado, and a few slices of tuna and salmon sashimi, cut into 6 pieces. It seems like they’re not doing too well in the deep-fried department, because I wasn’t a fan of any of our appetizers! The karage was pretty dry. Maybe if they were a bit thicker cut, they’d be a bit juicier? Def needs to be fried less! The coating/batter on the ebi mayo was really disappointing. I’ve had ebi mayo lots of times at other places, and this didn’t compare at all. Sushi Pizza — a bit difficult to eat, I wasn’t a fan of the deep fried rice. If anything, the house roll($ 4 – 5) would have been a better option. My favorite roll was the firecracker: scallop roll topped with spicy tuna, seared with a blowtorch. The torched fish gave everything a different smokey flavor, I loved it! The service was disappointing for sure. It was a Tuesday night, and it did get busy at times. But when it was quiet, the waitress would be standing on the side watching the room, even though we’ve been waiting about 15 minutes and definitely ready to order. She was the only one on the floor, and I think there was another girl who was probably handling the cash and helping in the kitchen. We had a bit of attitude from her(apparently, we’re supposed to know what a sushi pizza is), but when we tried to pay, the girl didn’t say anything, just popped the card into the reader without confirming with us what we wanted to pay, and quickly went back to packing up boxes. Service was a bit abrupt and rude, leaving little to be desired. It seems they get a lot of take-out orders(I wonder why.) Anyway, the rolls are alright, I’m not a fan of the 3 appies I ordered, and I’d definitely stay away from anything deep fried from here. Firecracker roll is tasty! If anything, just do takeaway!
