This is a venue that definitely does not get enough attention in our city. I mean, I’m biased because I live fairly close. I’m no theatre expert but it really seems like this place has everything you’d need. Lighting and sound are good. Seating is comfortable(but not, y’know, perfect). The round room that serves as the ante room is a) huge; and b) a venue unto itself. I’ve seen a few productions at the theatre but I’ve also seen it used for more corporate-style events such as podcamp Halifax. Perhaps the Alderney Landing Association(who run the theatre) needs to do more to promote it as a venue?

Real talk? I think the Alderney Landing Theatre and Round Room are two of the most underrated spaces we’ve got in this city. Every time I pop up to swoon over the view, the lighting, and the layout, I sink deeper and deeper into a venue crush. Wheelchair accessible with safe and reliable elevators(worth pointing out considering some of the others in the city), the theatre space is on the upper level of Alderney, just above the farmer’s market space. As you climb up, you get a gorgeous view of Halifax and the harbour through the all glass walls that only gets better once you reach your destination. Upstairs, the round as they call it is sizable and beautifully lit by the reflection off the harbour waters. All the glass makes the place feel even bigger than it is — kind of like an outdoor amphitheater… but, you know, inside. So, uh, a theatre. Nevermind. Bad comparison. While inside the theatre is comfortable for audiences and guests attending any number of community-driven performances throughout the year, I do find the stage strikes me as a bit small. I suspect that may be the only thing holding this space back from a booker’s point of view. All the other pieces are in place to welcome bigger touring productions otherwise.

This theatre, located in Alderney landing, sits a pretty good number of fogies and folks(280ish) and has good sight lines(depending on the set). I’ve seen a number of performances here, and as well, had the privilege of attending a thespian wedding set against a lovely theatrical backdrop. This spot is a popular venue for high school musicals and for dance shows and holiday events. The whole kit and caboodle is run by Alderney Landing, which I believe means that the outdoor music festivals swim through the hands of these same directors. The space is fairly standard, and since they seem willing to rent it out for a plethora of events, would probably make a decent space for any large functions. The theatre is accessible, with an elevator available to move people around, so fear not if stairs are an issue. All in all, a good space to see a show or to attend an event. If you’re looking to throw a shindig of your very own, get in touch with the fine Alderney folks to see if you can get hooked up.
