This place needs a face lift! Straight out of the early 80’s, both seats are torn and duct taped, service was mediocre at best. Waited 10min for a drink refill… Food was average… Likely will not go back, food court food is just as good!

Not a bad place, but food is below average. The potstickers and beer I would get at most, and have a full meal elsewhere.

Stopped in for a quick lunch prior to an EIFF screening at the adjacent cinema. We sat on the«patio» as the main pub is as dark as a dungeon. Ordered the beef dip with fries and a coke. Coke was flat and warm(as were all of the soft drinks ordered). Fries were soggy. Beef dip was bland, underseasoned, and served on a soggy roll with a greasy slice of cheese. Even the dill pickle was awful. My dining companions expressed little enthusiasm about their meals(Shepherd’s Pie and Thai Chicken Salad). From what I could see, the portions were large, but neither look particularly appetizing to me. Prices were reasonable. Service was relatively attentive, but it was noon at Sunday and the pub was not busy.

Elephant & Castle is a great little British pub located in City Centre(for this location), upstairs beside the entrance to the movie theatre. The reason I have visit this location so many times is due to its vicinity to the theatre. The guys and myself would head to the movie a little early and stop by this pub for either a drink or dinner. I have had a lot of the menu options including the appetizers. I would recommend a lot of things but my favourites are the pretzels(3 small ones with mustard) and the deep fried pickles(because everything is delicious when it’s deep fried). Make sure you check out the specials for that day, because they are generally great choices if you can’t make a decision. The food aside, I have a problem with this location’s service. I don’t always receive the fastest service here, so sometimes that can lead to some stress if you’re waiting for a movie. One good thing that I appreciated though was that when a waitress had served me different food than what I had ordered, the manager brought out the corrected food and left the other food free of charge. If you are a U of A student, one of the discount cards would get you 10−15% off the bill including alcohol. This great deal was what kept us coming back as well. Just be sure to offer the card before the waitress gets the bill and she will not be able to split the bill after the discount is applied(so just get your friends to pay you back). Also worth noting is that this location has a few dart boards(or maybe just one) which provide some entertainment as you are having a drink or waiting for food. There are a couple of TVs in there as well if you want to watch the game. If you have quite a bit of time before the movie stop here for dinner, or grab a drink and pay right away.

The food here is always great, the servers are generally nice, the issue is you’ll generally wait a solid 30 minutes for your food once you place an order. This is usually not a great thing when you pop in en route to a film at the theatre next door, however it’s great if you’re just in to chat with friends over pints while you wait.

I was meandering through the City Centre and came across an Elephant Castle. Whoa! That pub brought back memories from back in the day! Not this location though, another far, far away. At any rate I thought I could use a drink to wet my whistle and have a bowl of soup. I really should start eating something for breakfast and/or lunch I always tell myself. I decided on my drink and French Onion Soup. The service was good, friendly and fast. I did not really make my way too far into the pub, just sat on the little terrace outside of the pub darkness if you can call it a terrace. The soup was tasty, nothing special about it, just typical French Onion. REALLY small though. It was not a bowl of soup but rather a little cup. Costs being cut everywhere I guess. I left hungry but not really the server’s fault. Not a place I would rush back to by any means. I thought this place(seriously) would have been out of business 15 years ago.

I work very close to this place and in the past year and a half I have eaten there twice. The food is not bad but when did they decide to stop doing take out orders at lunch? I went there today to got lunch for myself and a co-worker and they gave me a hard time about ordering take out during lunch. They had just opened and there was no one else in the building, though they said that the kitchen would be too busy to make take out. I was just about to leave, when one of the waitresses said that she would put our order in… I got the food and returned to work, where we discovered that the veggies and the Yorkshire pudding was overcooked. It will be a long time before I eat there again… if ever.

On Saturday night, Michael J and I bought our tickets for Sherlock Holmes 2. That was at around 6:10 and the movie started at 7. No time to head out of City Centre Mall for dinner but we didn’t have to walk far to Elephant and Castle, where a quick and tasty bite awaited us. We were seated very quickly, although it took about 10 minutes for a server to come by to even offer us water after we were seated. To be fair, it was very busy at E&C since it was dinner time on a Saturday night, and I suspect a lot of people had the same plans we did. Once our server did come by the first time, she was much more attentive the rest of the meal. We ordered quickly, our food came quickly, and unfortunately, we ate it all really quickly, too. I say unfortunately because DANG, that was an effing tasty burger. If you like above-average pub food and you have a thing for English eats, I would definitely recommend this place. Probably only convenient for a movie night, and definitely not classy enough for a first date, but hey, we’re married now. It’s different ;-)

Food was ok. $ 17.00 for one piece of halibut… Very slow service, not sure when wait staff is going to learn that they are in the the service industry and not flirting with friends. Only reason 2 stars is their beer was ok.

I went here for a group gathering, and I wasn’t very impressed. The establishment was clean and the service was fairly efficient. No issues on that front. Actually, it was a lot cleaner than I expected, which was quite nice. My boyfriend and I had huge issues with the food. Everything tasted good, but proportions were way small. My boyfriend paid $ 7 for FOUR potato skins, from a small potato. Maybe if it was some kind of mutant large potato four skins would have been OK. But really? I almost spazzed when he got his plate… how is that a satisfying meal?!(It wasn’t even presented well.) I got the fish and chips, and I got two nice pieces of fish that were flaky and delicious … and about ten french fries to go along with them. It doesn’t make any sense, potatoes are cheap! Usually restaurants will pile on the potatoes to make you full and save money! I had a gin and tonic, and it came in the tiniest glass I’ve ever seen. I thought, «this is going to be strong,» considering one ounce of the what, three ounces of glass, most of which was ice, was gin. I could actually barely taste the gin at all. How does that work? My boyfriend got a pint of beer and the top two inches of his glass were empty. And neither of those things were cheap, either. Save your money, go elsewhere.

Went for lunch there today. Very slow service. Took forever for our order to be taken, and then had to search for the waitress to pay for the meal. Seemed that they were more interested in getting drinks for the other tables. Food was OK, but nothing to rush back for. Won’t be stopping there again. Next time will go to Sherlock’s as they seem to have more staff available and better prices on the menu.

I only went here because I was going to a movie afterwards. The British style pub motif is okay, I guess, but it just seems so odd inside of a deserted mall. I was just here for a quick appetizer and a beer so I could make the movie. Given my low rating, I guess it’s pretty obvious that I was late for the movie. You’re probably thinking, «oh, Mark L., well, that’s your own fault. Poor planning on your part!» Well, that’s the thing. I let the waitress know the situation and she assured me the appetizer – nachos – would be out in plenty of time. So it wasn’t all my fault! I don’t eat chicken or beef, so I asked if I could sub something else on the nachos. I thought this was reasonable since the nachos were pretty pricey(though, in their favour, the nachos did include guac which is normally a few dollars). The waitress said she could get more vegetables on top. The nachos ended up taking a long time; this is probably because they were very overcooked. Oh, cruel fate. The cheese was kind of burnt and really crusty. There was, however, a cache of perfect cheese underneath some tortillas, but once I had found it, it was too late. I am going to give this place another chance because I hear it has trivia on Thursdays! And the beer selection is decent. Update: there is no longer any trivia!

I feel bad to be the party pooper and give a 2 star for this bar. But it is exactly as the Unilocal sentiment puts it — «Meh. I’ve experienced better.» The far better experience, in this case, is the Elephant & Castle on Whyte! The staff don’t know much about what’s going on. I was getting a little annoyed with how one of the waiters went on and on, talking about how Pilsner Urquell was only available at the Elephant & Castle(and no other place in Edmonton). I like Pilsner Urquell but that statement is not only an exaggeration but also a cheap and desperate lie. It’s such a commonly available beer! Anyway, apart from that I’ve got to say that I just cannot appreciate the charm of a pub with a patio on the top floor of a mall. It’s bad enough that it’s in a mall but what’s worse is that almost every shop of the mall closes at 6 in the evening(at least on a Saturday when I was there) and yet there are people hanging out on the top floor patio. It’s a tad awry. I guess it’s nice to get a beer before the movie but personally I’d rather get a beer downstairs, outside the mall at Sherlock Holmes or Moriarty’s. The menu etc. and also the food looks good and of decent quality. But it’s just the below average service and location of this place that gives me the creeps.

I think this place is super cute and I really like it. It’s a great little British-style pub in City Centre. I think it’s a really good place to go for a beer with a group of friends. The atmosphere is great because it’s traditionally British. It’s got a comfortable feel to it. The staff are really nice here too — at least the ones who have served me were. They are always really friendly and take a minute to have some small talk with me. I like it. They have your typical pub food but it actually tastes good! They have an indoor patio. There’s not much point to it, but it’s cute. If you’re going to a movie at City Centre, stop here for a bite and a drink first. It’s worth it!

We stopped in here before heading to a movie at City Center. I wonder if the movie theatre wasn’t there if Elephant and Castle would get the business it gets. My boyfriend and I came in and my mom and dad were already sitting down eating. They had both ordered a spicy vegetarian curry dish. This sort of set the tone for what kind of place this was– British pub food. I just ordered water because I had already eaten, but my boyfriend ordered the«British burger.» Because it was a Monday, they had a deal where you could order something off a small menu for $ 18.99 and get a movie ticket as well. Considering that a movie ticket costs about $ 12, this seemed like a pretty good deal. The burger came topped with cheese, bacon and onion rings. It tasted sooo good. It was super juicy, hot and flavorful. The only complaint I have is that his salad was warm. Yuck. The price here was decent and it is a good place to meet friends for a drink pre or post movie, but I wouldn’t have gone out of my way for it. **Also keep in mind that the movie deal is only in effect on Mondays and Tuesdays**

Another great place to come together with great friends and great food is the Elephant and Castle located in the Edmonton City Center Mall(downtown) on the 3rd level. The place is like a pub atmosphere and right before you get it there is a sigh saying«No Minors» so this place is just for the adults. It’s kind of dark but I think it adds to the place. There is an indoor patio if you want to do some people watching and have more light. There is large seating to accommodate larger sized groups. If you are with friends I suggest ordering a whole bunch of starters and everyone shares them. Some really fantastic starters are the E&C Spinach Dip(Spinach and artichoke with cream cheese… so good!), the Calamari(fantastic), E&C Nachos(if you have a four or more in your group). They also have a sharing starter menu if you are interested in any of those. The Brushetta is very good. If it’s a cold day, like it usually is in Edmonton, than sip on the Pub Onion Soup to help keep you warm. For the main dish I like to order the E&C Club Sandwich or the Chicken & Mushroom Penne or the E&C Fish ‘n Chips(with Halibut). The service is really friendly and the food, most importantly, comes out in a reasonable amount of time. We all just love to sit and check up with each other and this is another one of our favorite places to do that. Also because Elephant and Castle is so close to the movie theater we usually catch a movie either before or after eating lunch or dinner. The prices are pretty good also; you can eat great without breaking the bank. Main dishes range from $ 10.00 — $ 23.00(for the steak). I find this place is a great place to also bring a date. It’s a nice place but it’s casual so it will help you both to relax a little bit. The atmosphere has magic powers! Must be the lighting!

Elephant & Castle has the feeling of a British pub. If I watched soccer I feel like this would be a place people should be watching the game and drinking some pints. They have a patio, which is outside the restaurant but still in the mall and it is only a few steps from the movie theater. I guess it would be perfect for dinner and a movie’s. They got it right with their sharing plates idea because you get quite a bit for a decent price. It gets pretty packed on Friday’s after work with people who work in the mall who come to enjoy a few cold ones.

I used to come here often with a friend who worked at a business in City Centre, so it was a convenient location for us. Usually we would just grab a beer(or two) and some of the warm, large, soft pretzels. They are served with mustard, have just the right amount of rock salt on them, and go well with the beer. The menu is very much like one would expect from a British style pub, like burgers, salads, finger foods, and the like. It is a bit dark and can get crowded, so I prefer to sit in the area looking out onto the mall(the«patio» area).

This is the perfect spot to meet if you’re waiting for friends to go to the movies with. I like the pub atmosphere — it just makes you want to order a pint — which I did. I introduced a friend to Stella which was on tap. Apparently they had some sort of promotion going on where there were scratch tickets. If you scratch the correct answer to the question you can enter to win a Stella jacket or something. Cool. The waitress gave us 8 cards all with the same question on it — something about how do you tame the head of a draft pint. The correct answer, of course, is with your finger.(Please god don’t spit in your beer!) The glasses were a bit sticky, my friend noticed. Ah well, I told her that alcohol was a disinfectant.

Elephant & Castle in City Centre is the perfect place to go before or after seeing a movie at Empire Theatre only a few feet away. It’s kind of funny, because you can«sit outside» at this restaurant, as if you’re on a patio, but really you’re still in the mall. I don’t come here to eat healthy. I come here to just enjoy my company and have some nice fattening food. This place is cool, because it’s very much like a pub, but with an extensive menu. I especially like to get the the Sharing Plates, because you get to choose three items for only $ 16, which is perfect for sharing with friends. My favourites to chose are sweet potato fries, veggie spring rolls, and bruschetta. From the dinner menu, I like the Chicken Caesar Salad and the Union Jack Chicken Burger. I’m not sure why, but I always enjoy my time here. I think it’s the atmosphere. It’s very laid-back and unpretentious.
