Great place. I almost want to keep it a secret. Prices are great and the first quality is wonderful. It’s like going to the farm to get your greens yourself! Super fresh, with a great variety of veggies and flowers this is a must visit in Edmonton. After you go, you will be hooked!

Organic produce raised on a community garden, run by volunteers and donations. I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed the garden before now. I’ve been visiting them for years since I learned about them, and my co-worker’s wife even volunteers! Organic, freshly harvested and RIPE food just tastes better. Not only do they have produce, there are flowers too! A HUGE variety of produce too! Artichokes on occasion! Potatoes, leeks, onions, lettuce, arugula, peas, beans, tomatoes, brussels sprouts, beets, kale, swiss chard, and more! Phew! What *haven’t* I bought there? Garden is open Tuesday and Saturdays during the harvest season. Check the website for hours and what is ready for picking. Cash only. Leave the plastic at home. You pay by donation. They suggest what you would pay for organic produce at a farmer’s market. I have been known to either not have change(sure sure), or overpay on purpose. They won’t judge. :D They will also accept donations for tax receipts. All monies raised are used to support Tubahumarize in Rwanda — you can even purchase some of the items and crafts that have been made from the program at the market. You don’t pick your produce, usually the volunteers head into the patch and grab what you need, sometimes, potatoes or other labour intensive harvest foods are already dug and at the front waiting for you Seeds for the planting are usually donated, they are all volunteers. And if you have the time, contact them to volunteer. See Paul S’s review for the link. No green thumb required, just a great spirit! It’s therapeutic to play with dirt and plants. When people aren’t high on your social calendar, plants don’t care if you don’t want to talk. Even if you don’t volunteer regularly, there is usually a need for volunteers to help plant the seedlings in early spring. No time commitment, and you can send something green growing. There’s a plant sale in the spring, and seeds too. Get there early for best selection. Again, watch their website for times and locations. Sign up for the email newsletter — they don’t badger you, and you only get an email once in a while. And if you happen to have good garden equipment to donate, they would appreciate it. Contact them to see what they might need.

We found out about the Green and Gold Community Garden a few years ago. It is also close to where we live so it is a great community garden for people who live close to the University farm or anyone else who wants to venture out there. This garden is open to the public to buy vegetables from. They also use funds raised to support charity. «All of the funds raised from the donations for produce go to the Tubahumurize Association, in Rwanda. Tubahumurize is a not-for-profit organization that supports socially and economically marginalized women — many of whom are survivors of the Rwandan genocide, widows or orphans, have HIV, or are victims of domestic violence. Tubahumurize offers trauma counselling, vocational training, health education, and micro credit loans that allow the women to start small businesses to support their family.» They take donations in return for produce. There are no set prices so they ask you to base your donation on what you would pay at a Farmers Market. The garden is huge as well, 2 acres I believe. They have a wide variety of produce and flowers available. If you get on their email list you will get an email each week telling you what produce is ready for sale. This is a great garden and model for a community garden. It is well worth checking out and buying some produce. You will not be disappointed!
