Not bad but not great. The service is friendly enough and the location is terrific(next to CWB Place). The food though leaves something to be desired. There is higher quality sushi in the downtown core for the same price.

Thank you, Sankyu, for having such a convenient location, right smack dab in the middle of downtown. LRT station right outside? Check. Bus route? Check. Walkable to bars for post-sushi drinks? Triple check! But really, it is the only excellent thing about you. Your food is OK, your service is slow, your prices are a bit pricy for the amount of food you get. At least they have plenty of the free newspapers for while you wait.

Wavered between 2 and 3 stars for this one … fast and friendly service won in the end and swayed me to give 3! Sankyu 2 Go is a quick and convenient place to pick up a sushi lunch when you’re downtown. The service is speedy and the folks are super friendly and helpful. Don’t expect much ambiance here — it’s a quick pick-up to-go kinda place. Although there is seating available, it’s not cozy or anything. And $ 13 seems a little steep for a bento box combo. Maybe at an actual restaurant where I’m sitting down to eat, but not for fast food sushi, uh-uh … that’s just criminal! It does come with a drink and salad, but still… this is basically fast food and fast food shouldn’t have to cost that much. Add $ 1 if you want to switch to brown rice. It was tasty, but I think I’ll seek other options next time.

Oh Sankyu, how you’ve fallen from the Sushi heavens. Your west side location was arguably one of the best places to go for modern sushi dishes. Your tuna dice was like no other and your presentation and vibe was spot on. Then you had to sell the restaurant and it’s never been the same. I searched and found you on Jasper as Sankyu 2 go. No tuna dice, but your bento’s and chirashi bowls never disappointed. Then I heard you sold Sankyu 2 go again. I really tried to give you a chance but to my dismay, your inside out rolls crumbled too easily, your portions were for teenagers(small and inadequate) and your flavors fell flat. I will pray that the sushi gods will smile upon you and have your name returned to its former glory. Until then, I’ll continue to dream of tuna dice. P. S. Patrons, please do not bring a jacket. It’s absolutely hot in here as there is no open ventilation.

I stopped by Sankyu looking for a non-chain, quick meal downtown on a Tuesday night(which drastically limits your options). It has a surprisingly large seating area, but was completely empty when I got there. I blame downtown in the evening for this though. They serve sushi and rice bowls and bento boxes… I went with a rice bowl. The sushi menu seemed a bit more expensive than I’ve seen at places like Kyoto, and since I hadn’t ever heard of this place in discussions about sushi, I decided not to try it. You place your order at a little counter in the back, then they bring it out to you. The one guy working there seemed pleasant enough, but I only saw him when he brought my food out. Everything else here is self-serve. My bowl was ok. I’ve definitely had better, but it wasn’t terrible. Sankyu certainly doesn’t compare to its neighbours(Transcend and Corso 32), but it was ok for a quick bite.

I ordered the bento box for lunch and was GREATLY disappointed! I found that it was extremely overpriced and the quality was very very poor. The sashimi was still FROZEN and I couldn’t even eat the tough«beef» that was also included. I would never go again!

I wanted to give Sankyu two stars, but to say that«I’ve experienced better» is not only an understatement, I would be doing a disservice to you, my trusty reader. Hear me out though: I have a feeling that I ordered the wrong things and it’s possible that they do other dishes well. However, that might just have been me wanting to have something positive to say about them because they seemed nice. Despite the«2 Go/Take Out» label that’s a part of their name, Sankyu actually has quite a large seating area in the front. The mismatched furniture peppered with signage to remind patrons to «DUMP your garbage» and clean up after yourself to the sounds of soft rock playing over the hum of whirring ceiling fans gives the place a properly fast food restaurant feel. I ordered a build-your-own bento box($ 11.75) to eat in and after I filled my plastic cup at the self-serve pop station with complementary iced tea, it was pleasantly brought to me in a proper bento box. With the arrival of the food is precisely when things started to go downhill though: the salmon teriyaki was obviously freezer burnt and cooked without having been thawed; the rice was not Japanese, but plain and white with questionably dirty grains in the mix; the tuna sashimi was still frozen in the centre; the salad was dressed with a bland Italian dressing; and the finger-sized spring rolls consisted of more deep fried wrapper and grease than any fillings. Mid-way through picking at my meal, I started to really regret having ordered more food to take with me for later. All I could do was return the smile when the friendly server brought my take away bag to the table and pointed to the packaged soy sauce on the counter which I was(understandably in retrospect) welcome to help myself to. Surprisingly, the chicken katsu was actually quite juicy within it’s crispy batter. The curry sauce however, tasted exactly like what it probably is — watered down Glico curry. It was spicy enough, but also incredibly bland at the same time with nothing but carrots and potatoes in it. I would definitely not come back to Sankyu for sushi, but in a snowstorm(worse than the one I was in the other day), I could probably be persuaded to try another rice bowl.

Walked in on a quiet weeknight in need of quick sustenance. Downtown Edmonton is deadsville this time of night, so no way to gauge daily sushi turnover — better go for cooked food. Udon noodles with chicken: fresh, not greasy, lots of flavour, nice veggies. Buddy’s udon soup looked even better — nice broth, lots of veggies. Super-friendly owners. Happiness achieved.

Second time trying Sankyu for lunch. It’s location is convenient and it draws a decent lunch time crowd of suits and skirts. The rolls are overpriced in my opinion, but the take away offerings in the cooler are a bit more reasonable. The special rolls are pricey but the size/protion of the rolls compensates. They offer substituting brown rice in their dishes at an extra cost, which I thought was great. I would like to try the bento boxes as I noticed that a lot of people were eating them. I liked it as a change from my regular sushi lunch joint but I don’t think I’ll be frequenting Sankyu.
