When in Halifax there’s no better place for dinner. Excellent food and service. The French onion soup is to die for! My server, Chris, was polished and professional, offering wine choices for each course. Kudos to the chef. A Halifax must!

Great service, food and ambiance. Had the bone marrow, french soup, scallops, duck breast and crème brulle, all were great. Waitress provided great service and was completing her sommiler course so was knowledgable on wine as well. Fairly quiet and intimate setting along the same lines as La Frasca. Only downside was the waitress’s workload seemed a little heavy, although she handled it well was hesitant to hold her back too long to chat about the food and wine.

Went for the first time with the hubby on a rare date night. The restaurant is lovely with an nice décor. We started with the charcuterie which was quite simply amazing. Followed by quiche(chicken, goat cheese, mushroom, thyme) which was a daily special for me and steak and frites for the hubby. Everything was delicious. As well, our server was very friendly. Overall a great experience. Look forward to going back!

Delicious! We have been on the road and were craving vegetables so we had a bunch of small plates — Brussels sprouts, fries in duck fat, green beans, charcuterie, and salad lyonnaise. We drank the provance sour, the st Germain fizz, the viogneier, and the café al vanilla. The service was outstanding. The food was delicious, especially the green beans almondine and duck confit rillett. Would visit again! Thanks for a wonderful evening :)

I get dragged here alot by the wife. She loves Le Coq. This place has a traditional french restaurant menu. It is missing Halifax restaurant staples such as lobster, hamburgers, pizza, fish and chps, etc… but why would it have these items? They run a traditional French menu. I only identify this because I see a lot of people check the menu on the patio then leave. Fare is excellent, good flavours, wife swears by the cheese plate(crakers, jams, cheeses, etc.) You can get a glass of champagne for about 6 bucks which I don’t think is common in most places to offer. They have two on tap beers, an amber ale and a wheat beer. Personally, if I only had two taps, I would not have a wheat beer, I don’t know too many people that drink alot of wheat beer. I would have a light craft brewery ale; people come for the patio and stay for the on-tap beer. I notice they have patio speakers as well that are never playing any music, man play some Edith Piaf or some 30s-40s French tunes and add to the ambience. The servers are very good, there is one dude with glasses who is exceptional, he seems to be genuinely interested in making the dining experience fantastic. Anyways great place we will be back.

This restaurant is very classy inside. I loved the interior, beautiful restaurant & a nice little bar with a few hipsters around it. The food was great, if french is your cup of tea. French is not like Italian, not everyone is going to love it. The beer menu was good, wine menu was great & I would go back to try something else. Price is more of a 3 out of 5 dollars though, not 2 ;)

What an interesting little find! My brother and I dropped into this restaurant to try something new. Well this was definitely something new! Walking in its a beautiful little restaurant, the bar is huge and decorated very European. Greeted and taken to our seats, we then received the menu. To my surprise, it was mostly in french. Both of us not knowing french we still decided to try a few things. We ordered the ceaser, the onion soup and the mussels with duck fat frys. First of all we thought the ‘ceaser’ was a salad. To our surprise it was the drink. It was good but personally I wouldn’t want the horseradish. The onion soup was awesome! Really filling though! The mussels and duck fat fries, oh my gosh! What a flavor! Love the tecture and the flavor to the fries. Never thought it would be something I would recommend but wow I’m looking forward to having more! Going in I didn’t think I was going to order, but now I’m looking forward to going back!

Great ambiance! I love the place that really sets the mood. The food was good too and I was happy to know that they serve escargots! Because that’s what I’m going to order in my next visit.

phhht. A fake. Don’t be deceived. Food(0⁄3 stars) It’s easy to be fooled into thinking you’re going to have a traditional French meal in this place but you won’t. I was here with 4 guests and tried all the food. Nothing had flavor. How does someone take duck confit and prime striploin and create a meal with no flavor? BLAND! EXPENSIVE! Reminds me of wannabe chain restaurants. Atmosphere =(1⁄1 star) Pretty cool French atmosphere, is this a chain restaurant? Service(0⁄1 star) I don’t even know what to say. Whenever I talked to the waitress she just confused me and made me feel awkward. The food also took an extremely long time and we were one of two tables in the restaurant. Main Enjoyment: The atmosphere. But I came here to eat. I would’ve rather paid for the ingredients, took them home and cooked them for myself. Main Complaint: Paying top dollar for a meal with no flavor. How is this possible?

Vous parlez Français? Du fromage SVP? Annoyed yet? Baha, all jokes aside, having lived in France for quite some time, I can vouch that the layout of the place is quite accurate to how bistro’s look in France. It’s really cozy & bright with looots of wines from France. It’s quite nice. Our server was really nice & patient considering how long it took for my friend & I to pick something from the menu.(everything looked good) My friend is a vegan, so there wasn’t must to choose from for her but, let’s be fair, France and(most restaurants) don’t really aim for this diet. It was lunch time so I went for the Croque-Monsieur. Which is kinda like a panini with ham and cheese but with nice, homemade bread. The ham was actual chunks of ham and not sliced processed stuff. However, I think the cook may have pan-fried it too long because the ham was reeeeeally salty(which is usually what happens to it if you pan-fry it too long). It came with french fries(;P) which were handcut but didn’t taste like much and a delicious garlic spread that I spread on my sandwich. The best part of the entire experience was the little bowl of ketchup the server came me. SERIOUSLY. It was and awesome looking bowl. I guess, to conclude, I kinda left this place with a «meh» expression. Everything was fine but nothing was«WAM-BAM-WOW»

Go. Have the cheese plate. Be amazed. If you like cheese(and, please, tell me you do!) that will serve as a great entry point. I heard several people speak about the cheese plate earlier this year and finally decided to give it a try. For $ 12, it’s a great investment. You get a ton of cheese, grapes, nuts, spreads and breads. I shudder to think how much the large($ 24) would be. Beyond that? The food is pretty good. I’ve been very satisfied every time I’ve gone. Staff are very professional and clearly know what they’re doing. I would encourage you to make a reservation if you can. Every time I’ve gone, I’ve been asked if I have a reservation. Usually, I don’t. They make, quite frankly, too big a deal, «Mmmmaaaayyyyybbeeee we can find you a table.» And then they do. Every time. That’s not to say it isn’t busy(It is, very!) but it feels a tad disingenuous that I’ve never actually not gotten a table despite the forewarning.

We felt like we were back in Paris! All the menu items were very appealing. We had the French onion soup which was sweeter than your typical French onion soup. The duck confit salad was very nice, the pairing of beets, duck and hazelnut was very interesting. The bread serving before the meal was very warm and fresh. The only complaint is the dessert. We had the pistachio cake which was a huge disappointment. It was very dry and tasted almost stale.

By far the best meal I’ve had in years in this city. First time trying bone marrow and it was one of the tastiest things I’ve ever tried. This place should have made it in the coast«best of» edition this week. Highly recommend.

I went there on the strength of the positive recent posting in Unilocal.Came away disappointed. Two negative aspect of my meal overwhelmed the positive ones. First, the French Onion soup was totally undistinguished, imminently forgettable. Second, The pomme frites were greasy and soggy, overwhelming the positive qualities of the mussels, and the rest of the meal. It is my wish that this place prosper, but in order to do so the quality control will need attention. I will give it one more try.

My wife and I both really like this place. We’ve been there 4 times now. They serve a delicious Steak. Only once out of the 4 times was the Steak not up to par, but I’m pretty forgiving of that because I loved the food overall and also love the ambiance. My wife is a sucker for the French Onion Soup. We’ll continue to come back to this place.

Whether or not I just don’t like authentic French cuisine or Le Coq in general I’m not sure. My boyfriend brought me for supper here during the summer and we had a really nice dining experience, although it wasn’t particularly good food. Again, whether or not it is any fault of Le Coq I don’t know. Immediately upon walking in we told the waiter my boyfriend was vegan. He immediately walked to the back and told the chef, the waiter came back and told us it’ll take a while but the chef will whip up something delicious. Awesome! I decided on an order of French Onion soup to start and the gnocchi as a main. Now I really haven’t had an authentic French onion soup so compared to the stuff I’m used to I found this really vinegar-y and I didn’t like it that much. The cheese on top was really delicious though. I found it kind of underseasoned too and added salt to it. My boyfriend raved about his. The chef really did their best to make the most creative meal possible. It was a portebello mushroom cap with potato, roasted tomato purée and a pomegranate sauce. It was really fantastic and she came up with it on the spot so bravo to Le Coq for being so accomodating! The gnocchi for me was also just okay. It just reminded me of mashed potatoes and veggies. It had a beurre noisette and a mirepoix but thats really all that it had. I found it bland! I ended up adding salt and pepper to it too. I feel like it lacked an acidic component. I finished with the soufflé which was tasty. It came with a grand marnier sauce which was so creamy and not overly sweet, it went beautifully with the soufflé! The service was outstanding. The waiter was extremely polite, attentive but not to the point that it was annoying, and he accommodated all of our needs and gave us awesome drink suggestions.

We went to Bistro Le Coq by accident. We’d been planning to eat somewhere else on Argyle Street and ended up getting a parking space right outside. As a testament to human laziness, we opted to eat at the closest restaurant instead. Bistro Le Coq strikes the perfect casual/fancy balance. It’s comfortable and it feels like it could actually be a French bistro. There are lots of nice little touches, like a bottle of still water left on the table and nice warm slices of baguette to start. We were there on a Tuesday evening and it wasn’t very busy — just enough to feel comfortable. Our server was efficient and helpful and spoke French, which added to the authenticity of the place. I ordered the roast chicken with frites. The chicken was juicy and seasoned to perfection and the frites were crispy and delicious. Our meals were reasonably priced — $ 19 for my chicken. They were also offering a special three-course fixed-price menu for the month of February for $ 45, which looked outstanding. Quite a happy little parking accident after all! I look forward to going back for gnocchi soon. Date night success!

I went here last month for my birthday, with a group of several friends. I’d been wanting to do a full meal here for a long time, and what better time than this? While I waited for my schedule challenged friends, I sipped on one of Le Coq’s very unique cocktails, the Bohemian. With cognac, B&B liqueur, tea and lemon peel, it was a drink that despite having some kick, wasn’t going to demolish my palate for the upcoming meal. Once my friends(that I totally did not hire to make my birthday less depressing.) arrived we placed our orders. Most people stuck with drinks and appetizers, but being the occasion that it was, I wanted to sample a few things. To start, I ordered their moules à la Normande et frites, aka mussels and fries(so much less classy in English. This is not a small appetizer and while I probably should have shared it more than I did, the mussels were too good to give more than a polite attempt at sharing. They were creamy and the bacon was noticeable and flavourful, and I would swear that the frites had some sort of bacon seasoning on them that they normally don’t when ordered on their own or with other dishes. However, I’m not well versed in duck fat fried frites, so it may have been the savoury flavour of the duck fat. For my main I decided to walk a bit on the wild side and try their steak tartare sandwich, as I had never tried steak tartare before. The finely chopped steak was served open –faced and topped with a poached egg. The meat was tender and flavourful, and was nicely complemented by the acidity of the dressing it seemed to be tossed with(lemon perhaps, like a ceviche?) and pepper, as well as the richness of the soft yolk of the poached egg. Service was prompt and attentive throughout the night, and extremely accommodating for a decent sized party ordering from all over the menu. I don’t think more can be said about the fantastic interior, other than that their bathroom was so nice I felt guilty using it.

The BEST ever!!! The true French!!! Service. Food. Atmosphere. Location. Prices. Even ALL plates and menus have their unique Le Coq(rooster) pictures! How cute is that! Assiette de charcuterie & Fromages avec des Confitures. Superb. The right taste, the right pickled veges, the right confitures. Poulet rôti. The smell of that dish will make you hungry even after finishing the first two mentioned above. :) Duck confit salad. Superb. Fresh, cool, with hazelnuts and dried cranberries and the most delicious duck ever. A tip: Save your fig jam from charcuterie plate for the duck. ;) Soufflé. Superb. Soooo light!!! Soooo grand marnier!!! I liked«Patois» in New Orleans( ). But Le Coq is the best! Trust me. ;)
