Dalhousie Student Union Building

Oh, Dal sub. What would I do without you? Every second morning I come here for my $ 5 avocado bagel and coffee combo from Petes.
I’m taking off two stars though because the book store is highway robbery, they treat you like a criminal, and the service is terrible. I had a defective $ 70 sweater and they basically told me to go fuck myself because it was past ten days. Classy for a university that is already robbing me blind for books (I’ve started buying them from Amazon for half the price, so suck my middle finger dal book store).
The other places to eat are also decent, even the sushi place, though it isn’t restaurant grade of course. It’s nice that they have halal options for other students as well.
I like that there is a little fireplace I can sit by and eat, but I find that the computer science building is a quieter and more enjoyable place to hang out and study.

The girlfriend had an appointment upstairs in the student union building… so like the good boyfriend I am. I sat quietly in the main floor playing some crib on the iPad.
It did take me a little while, sampling a few different chairs, to find a good one. avoided a few big, well stained chairs.
The WiFi is not free for visitors like me, unfortunately.

I wants a DAL student in my university days, I went to SMU, but I did have a lot of friends at DAL and therefore spent a lot of time at the SUB. Honestly the selection of food vendors really seems to become much more limited than I remember, but they are all still pretty tasty for caf food, but nothing special. The sub itself is usually pretty clean, and there is lots of seating which is nice. It can make a good place to study if you don’t like the library, but it can be noisy

I figured I would put in a good wood for some of the food here, if you go to the cafeteria on the first floor and walk all the way past the cardboard pizza to the grill station you will get a pleasant surprise. All day breakfast… three magical words. I had the breakfast fajita around lunch time and the short-​order cook whipped up two fresh eggs (not hockey pucks, cough, Subway), fresh veg, cheese, salsa with a toasted tortilla. Then he piled on fresh-​out-​of-​the-​fryer hash browns.
I’m scared of food on campus too but I have added hot off the griddle breakfast fajitas to my list!

Nothing has change about SUB though. If you can avoid Tim’s at all cost. The workers there has terrible manners almost everytime (with the exception for one or two of them)

It feels weird to review the entire SUB because there are so many aspects, that how can the entire thing be summed up in one simply rating.
Let’s start with food services, since that’s one of their major draws. To say I was disappointed with the food that was on offer would be a bit of an understatement. Appalled might be more apt. When I returned to Dal in September, I ate there once. Instantly regretted it. The pizza was … It just wasn’t very good.
It’s only in the last month or so that I’ve started eating there again and the food is still disappointing. I understand that they have a large volume of people to feed. So do most fast food restaurants. And yes, I am implying that the quality of food at McD’s is better than at the SUB. I really feel that the food would be better if there were better on-​campus competition. Students don’t have much choice so they eat this but I know better food is out there.
On the positive side, it really is a great space for students. If you are bringing your own food, there are microwaves. There are a fair number of places to sit and there’s the free wifi.
It’s also a great venue for events and there’s always something happening here. Lots of student resources can also be found on site; the book store, Campus Copy, student services and more.
They just gotta do something about that food court. So it’s 1 for food, 4 for everything else. And since there’s lot of everything else, let’s say it’s 3.

Like Lacey, I also recall spending large amount of time darting in and out of the Dalhousie SUB.
With the bookstore as well as campus copy downstairs, this place is definitely a central locale on campus.
The food is pretty meager although the addition of a booster juice was definitely a much needed touch! Not all of us can subsist off of bagels and burnt pizza.

During my undergrad, I spent a fair amount of time running in and out of this building, attending meetings and sipping the odd coffee. The main foyer, complete with a help desk and courtesy telephone, is an open space with some seating, often boasting info fairs and poster sales. At the back of the main floor, you’ll find the infamous Grawood, along with ATMs and a Video Difference drop box.
The food offerings in the SUB are SUBpar, which has been rallied against for the last few years. I’m not sure if any major shifts have occurred, but when I visited a few weeks ago and took a peek into the cafeteria, all was looking relatively similar.
In the basement, there’s a Travel Cuts office along with the Dal bookstore. If you head in the opposite direction and climb in lieu of descending the cement stairs, you will find auditoriums and meeting rooms. If you’re affiliated with a society, you can easily book rooms for group meetings and small functions. On the second floor, there’s some okay seating along the windowed wall, where you can read and watch the students milling about below.
In all, this is a fairly standard Student Union Building. Better food and a more cozy atmosphere would definitely jump the SUB up a star on the old rating meter, but for now, an A-​Okay is where it’s at.
